Default Install Guide: Zero/Sports WRC Pulley

Hello again from EDO Performance!

Today we have for you an installation guide for the Zero/Sports WRC Pulley. It is being installed on a 2006 STi, but the procedure will be the same for any other compatible Subaru.

The Zero/Sports WRC Pulley is a direct replacement for the WRX/STi crankshaft pulley. The factory pulley weighs in at a heavy 5.4 pounds and is a perfect place to shed some weight. Removing weight from a moving part of the engine is even more critical than removing dead weight from any other part of a car. Removing the weight from the pulley allows the engine to move faster with less effort, allowing for faster revving response and the production of more horsepower and torque.
The Zero/Sports pulley, made of lightweight aluminum, weighs in at a very light 1.4 pounds. The pulley will remove a full four pounds of weight from your engine, which adds up to a big difference!

1. Before installation, you might want to open your hood and let the engine bay cool. You will be working near some parts that can get pretty hot.

2. The first step is to remove the belt cover and air intake snorkel. This can be done by removing the four 12mm bolts circled in the picture. Although it is not required to remove the intake snorkel, I find it gives you a little extra room to work with.

3. Next, you can start taking the belts off. To remove the air conditioner belt, loosen the 12mm nut on the tension adjuster pulley and then start to unscrew the tension adjuster bolt. You will notice the pulley start to move up, continue unscrewing the bolt until there is enough slack to get the belt off the air conditioner compressor pulley. When removing the belts, make sure you remember which one went where, as the two are different.

4. Now you need to remove the alternator/power steering belt. This works in a very similar way, except the alternator itself is the tensioning pulley. Loosen the alternator bolt, then start to unscrew the adjuster bolt. As you unscrew it, press down on the top of the alternator until it is low enough to remove the belt.

5. Now you can remove the large bolt that holds the crank pulley in place. To keep it from turning you will need to pull up the parking brake and put the car in fifth or sixth gear.

6. Using a 21mm socket and a long breaker bar, remove the bolt at the center of the pulley. The bolt is in very tight (spec. 133 ft/lbs), so you might need to use some force.

7. In a side-by-side weight comparison, the Zero/Sports WRC Pulley weighed in a full four pounds lighter than stock. That’s a lot of weight!

8. Install the new pulley where the old one was, making sure the little notch in the center is lined up correctly. Attach it with the old crank pulley bold and torque to 133 ft/lbs.

9. Install the accessory belts on to their respective pulleys and tighten them using the long adjuster bolts you loosened before. Tighten each belt so that you can only push it down about one-quarter to one-half of an inch.

10. Tighten the bolts on the alternator and the tension adjuster pulley (18 ft/lbs each).

11. Reattach the belt cover and intake snorkel.

12. Close the hood, get in, and enjoy the new power and response!

So what's the advantage of this piece?

It looks the same diameter as stock, so it doesn't overdrive right? Also looks like there's some harmonic dampening material in the stock one. Is there any risk of removing it when you install a solid aluminum pulley?

It has been stated by Subaru that the stock pulley provides no dampening effect. The Zero/Sports pulley is the stock diameter so there will be no under/over drive issues. The only risks to the part are improper installation, so just be careful and take your time. And if you don't feel confident in your abilities you can always let a professional shop take care of it for you.

I believe the Perrin install instructions said 90 ft lbs and the Subaru service manual says 133 for the stock pulley.

It should make it a little rev happier, but in reality, it's a very minimal difference. It's hard to say if the difference you feel is psychological or physical to be honest. After installing the perrin pulley (which is a little lighter even than the zerosports one) we didn't notice much of a difference at all. That's not to say it doesn't do anything, just don't expect it to blow your socks off.
