Do you already have the vane? Do you have a buddy with an 06-07 car? The base of the vane mounts should be contoured to fit on the c-pillar/roof in a certain way, you can eyeball it. Or if you have a buddy with an 06-7 car you can measure it. Or better yet see if he'll remove the vane for you so you can make templates out of some paper for the holes. That would be the most accurate way.

I don't have a template, but I did go down to the local dealer when I did mine and measured the distance from the top of the back window to the front of the vane mounting brackets and it turn out to be about an inch. If you buy yours from a dealer you can use the mounting brackets as a template. just tape them into place. here is how mine turned out. Mine has been on for about a year and a half with not problems at all.

I don't know who's telling lies here.
I bought me one for my 07 Ltd along with car purchase itself. After it came to the dealership, they called to come to have it installed. When I arrived they started putting the vane on, and 15 minutes later dealership manager called and showed that on cars with roof vane there's supposed to be a bolt sticking out of the body, welded to it, that you're suppose to bolt your vane to, and that they could fabricate something but he wouldn't guarantee it's not gonna bend something.
So after all I ended up with credit for the vane...

There are industrial strength adhesives you can use instead. That is how some Mini rear spoilers are mounted. Here is a PDF complete with BMW adhesive part numbers. If it will hold the JCW spoiler, it will hold that little roof vane Just be sure to measure correctly as you will be sanding the paint.

I understand the adhesives and everything, but what about down/upforce generated by the vane that you try to dissipate over thin metal sheet.
On OEM mounting the studs are welded to reinforcing plates underneath and they provide support not the surface metal sheet.
Think about it.
They didn't give up easily, but told me they could fabricate something, but wouldn't warranty it.

I've thought about it. What do you think the JCW spoiler is attached to? Sheet metal. That little roof vane isn't going to rip the sheet metal off or bend it...it's not an F1 wing nor nearly the size/weight of the John Cooper Works wing. The adhesives listed in that PDF are strong.

Well, You do whatever you want. I just know that I had a rattle in the back of my car and to check if it's not a strut I pushed on rear quarter panel, and it left a litlle dent that pissed me off so bad...

And it also depends how fast you drive. If you take your car to the track and be running at like 150MPH, I think it will be quite a bit of force. I heard somewhere that STi wing is generating 80lbs of downforce at 85MPH. Think about it.
To risk or not to risk, that is the question.
