Default Install Guide: Zero/Sports Super Direct Flow Intake Kit

Hello again from EDO Performance!

Today we have for you an installation guide for the Zero/Sports Super Direct Flow Intake Kit. It is being installed on a 2002 WRX, but the procedure will be the same for any other turbocharged Impreza, and most other newer model turbocharged Subarus.

Give your car some JDM power and style with the Super Direct Flow intake system from ZERO/SPORTS!
This kit consists of two pieces: the filter kit and the air intake pipe. The filter kit significantly increases the air intake to the engine while providing superior filtration capability. It helps to archive better throttle response and reduce the air intake resistance.
The use of stainless steel mesh filter ensures durability and reliability of the filter. Inside the filter, a built-in velocity stack smoothes out airflow and directs the flow toward the mass airflow sensor allowing it to read the airflow more accurately. The intake pipe replaces the piece between the filter and the turbocharger inlet pipe. The factory piece is made of “accordion style” plastic with a very bumpy interior that creates air turbulence. The ZERO/SPORTS pipe is made has a smooth interior with silicone couplers to ensure maximum airflow.
Combined, these two parts your Subaru the performance you would expect from a ZERO/SPORTS product.

1. First off, the intake must be prepared for installation on the vehicle. The first step in doing that is removing the filter from the mass air flow (a.k.a. “MAF”) housing by loosening the large hose clamp with a philips screwdriver.

2. Tighten the 3 bolts circled in red in the picture (in relation to the MAF sensor hole) using two 10mm wrenches.

3. Remove the last bolt and install the green mounting bar as shown in the picture. Tighten the bolt just enough so it won’t fall apart, but is still moveable. We will need to adjust it later.

4. Now that we have the intake ready to go, we can get under the hood and pull the stock intake out. Start by removing the two 10mm bolts that hold down the front of the intake snorkel and then lift the snorkel out. Also remove the MAF by taking out the two Philips screws holding it down and un-clipping the connector. Set the MAF sensor aside carefully as it is easy to damage it.

5. Next you will remove the upper half on the intake box and the intake pipe that connects the box to the turbo inlet. This can be done by popping off the two clips on the box and loosening the screw on the hose clamp. Pull up and toward the passenger side of the car and it should lift right out. Once removed, take the hose clamps off both sides of the intake pipe and set them aside, you will need them later.

6. Now, follow the bottom of the intake box downward and you will see it connects to the frame of the car in two places with 12mm bolts. Remove these bolts using a 12mm socket on a very long extension. Lift the air filter out and you will see part of the silencer jug from the fender hanging inside the intake box. Push that opening out of the intake box and remove the box from the car.

7. With the intake removed, your engine bay should now look like this. You are now ready to install the new intake.

8. First, take a look at the new intake pipe. You will notice it has one opening that is smaller than the other side. Find the smaller of the two blue connecters and using one new hose clamp and the one you took off the turbo inlet, connect the new intake pipe to the turbo inlet with the Zero/Sports logo facing up. Use the other old hose clamp to attach the larger blue connecter to the large end of the intake pipe. Yours should now look like the picture above.

9. Take the MAF sensor housing section and connect it to the intake pipe using the last new hose clamp. Do not tighten the clamp as you will need to adjust it first. Next, secure the green mounting bar to the frame using the front hole and 12mm bolt that had secured the stock box.

10. To install the MAF sensor, use the screws and spacers included with the intake as shown in the picture (spacers between sensor and housing). Install the sensor in the same direction it was removed and hook the MAF cable back up.

11. Next, the intake needs to be adjusted a bit so it will clear the hood when it closes. Rotate the MAF housing section toward the turbo to make it as low down as possible.

12. Once you have the intake sitting as low as possible, secure it in place by tightening the last hose clamp. Then you can tighten that last 10mm bolt holding the green mounting bar on using two 10mm wrenches as you did earlier.

13. The last step is to attach the filter element using the extra large hose clamp included with the kit.

14. After any mod, it is always a good idea to reset the ECU. This can be done one of two ways. Either disconnect the negative (black) battery terminal and pump the brakes a few times. Or, use an aftermarket engine management system that allows for an ECU parameter reset (like the Cobb AccessPort).

15. Congratulations! You have just installed your new intake. Now get out there and have some fun with it!
