Default Install Guide: STi Group-N Transmission Mount

Hello again from EDO Performance!

Today we have for you an installation guide for the STi Group-N Transmission mount. It is being installed on a 2002 WRX, but the procedure will be the same for any other manual transmission Impreza.

Ever wondered why your shifter feels a little “sloppy” or “loose” when looking for that next gear? Well, part of the reason for that is the mount that holds your transmission in place is made of soft rubber that’s full of holes! This soft factory mount allows the transmission to move around, adding play to the shifter linkage and increasing the power loss through the drivetrain.
Upgrading to the hardened Group-n mount will give you a more solid shifting feel and keep your transmission and driveline steady to help more of your power get to the wheels!

1. First, as with most installs, you need to get the car in the air. Jackstands, ramps or a lift. Whichever you have available. You might be able to get away with just lifting the front, but some of these bolts are on pretty tight so the more room you can make for yourself the better.

2. Once you have the car up, you need to put something under the transmission to hold it up when you remove the mount brace. The easiest way to do this is just a floor jack with a block of wood on it. You don’t need to lift the transmission at all, just put a little pressure against it to hold it in place.

3. Next, you need to remove the brace beams that connect the lower half of the mount to the frame of the car. The easiest way to do this is by removing the two 17mm and four 14mm bolts circled in the picture. One bolt is partially covered by the downpipe so you may need to either remove that section of the downpipe, use a low profile wrench/breaker bar, or what I did, use a swivel head 14mm socket. Once those bolts are removed the brace should just come right out.

4. You can now get to and remove the four 14mm bolts holding the mount to the transmission. Remove these and the old mount will come off. You can see in the side by side picture exactly how flimsy the stock mount is in comparison.

5. Place the new mount on the transmission and secure it in place with the same four bolts @ 26 ft/lbs.

6. Re-secure the transmission frame brace with the bolts you removed earlier. 26 ft/lbs for the nuts on the lower side of the transmission mount, 52 ft/lbs for the 14mm bolts and 103 ft/lbs for the 17mm bolts.

7. Lower the car back down, get in, and enjoy!

Also- this is the perfect time to install Turn In Concept's tranny crossmember bushings!

And with the tranny mount out of the way, it can be a bit easier to install the Front Shifter Stay Bushings and the Shift Link Bushings from TiC.

I would make sure that the bolts are torqued to spec. Good habit to have.

Can you add the torque specs for the bolts if you have it?

You don't have to remove the front cross support (the 17mm bolt one). If you just remove the front to back support and slightly jack up the tranny, you can get the mount out with little effort. Not a huge difference, but that's how i did it.

Stay tuned for the Engine Mount installation!

Super tough, but a little patience and they're now installed!

Thanks, Pharo! We do what we can to support the Subaru Community. We're all a bunch of car enthusiasts ourselves and know how useful the How-To's are to the Do-It-Yourselfer. We do what we can to make life easier.

The engine mount write-up should be completed today...just prepping the pictures.
