Just ordered:

5 x MOTUL GEAR 300 RACING 75W90 1 liter
1 x MOTUL 90 PA LSD 2 liter

from - LTB Motorsports - $92 + $7.95sh = $99.95

Cheapest price around and they also take PayPal.
My car is SO ready for Tranny/Rear Diff oil change.

just did this and would like to the the original poster for the informative write up, it helped a lot

and i am definitely in agreement with everyone else who has done this, it really really helps with those odd grinds here and there that you get with the stock gear oil.

also a side note, i have an 06 and i had the T70 torx clutch side drain plug, i just used a taped up T60 like someone mentioned earlier and it did the trick; but i wonder when subaru changed this? mid year or so?

Everyone says 30K which should be fine; however, I have no idea where people are getting this info from. I checked all the maintanence intervals up to 100k on my.subaru.com and it doesn't list changing the transmission fluid/rear diff fluid at all (in all fairness, I'm not sure if this is SOA's maint. schedule or my dealership's).

Anyway, I checked the maintanence interval schedule in the manual for these fluids and an (I) "inspect" is listed every 30k; no (P) "perform" or (R) "replace" are listed. There is a linked note for these fluids which says they should be replaced every 15k if the car is used in extreme driving conditions (hot weather, dusty, etc.)

So basically, according to the manual, it says you don't need to change the transmission/rear diff fluid at all unless the car is driven in extreme conditions , in which case it should be changed every 15k. I think its safe to assume all STIs are driven under "extreme conditions" and I would recommend changing it every 15-20k.

I was dissapointed enough to not see a specific transmission fluid (part #) listed for the picky 6 speed in the manual. Knowone even knows for sure what comes in the 6 speed from the factory, this is inexcusable.

Are these the same for the '07 STI since it uses the T-70?

just did this and the diff. and I couldn't get the oil pan drain screw out... I even tried with an air gun and couldn't even break it loose... So I jacked up the back of the car and tried to get as much out of the clutch housing drain as possible then just replaced the oil and that was that. It shifts sooooo much smoother now.

When all else fails, I usually take out my breaker bar (in on the first picture) and take out the bolt in 1 shot

Did mine this weekend. Subaru OEM LSD fluid and Valvoline 75W-90.........the only place I use synthetic is in the engine, Mobil 1 10W-30. Flushed the coolant as well, 1 gallon of subbie coolant and 1 gallon of distilled water.

The beast runs fine.

Sounds like you got lucky. The Autozone I usually go to only had a T60. I also tried sears, but no luck. Maybe I'll try calling some other Autozones. Torx fasteners work great, but I wish I didn't have to try to find such an uncommon bit.
