Default DIY: Knee board padding

I got this idea from the nice padding that the 350Z had in their interior. During hard cornering, ie autoX i brace my knees on the side of my center console and the door cards.
Heres my solution.

Materials:
Suede material from frabic store: $4/yard
Foam: $6
Spray Glue: $4

Hard Center console plastic.

starting the removal

Note: to get to the last screw, you have to unbolt the lower steering column brace.

outlining the padding

Glued the suede over the padding

Installed!!

Not bad

i made a smaller one for the door card, thats removable. Still havent found a good solution for this.

I got a piece of flexable cutting board, wrapped it in foam and suede and sticky velcro, so that the knee padding would be removable.

im not satisfied with the outcome. maybe ill get some AL sheet metal to make it more to the coutour of the door

Its interesting you brought this up... I was kind of noticing that in hard cornering my legs are either flopping around, or I'm tensed up with my legs pressed in similar locations. You could tie your legs together and then make this hook on the steering column...

I think race drivers solve this by having those molded seats that restrict motion. Probably not very comfortable for extended periods of time, not to mentiona PITA to get in and out of...

I'm interested in how this turns out. Looks pretty good so far!

Looks really nice, I like the suede. Maybe someday I'll actually do some autoX and need something like this

Ever thought of one of those strap-in harnesses?

4-Point Harness is a def fix instead of this, get aftermarket seats and harness and your golden. This is def a great mod for those who want to retain their stock seats and seatbelt system. Great job.

There are at least two harnesses on the market that require no mods to put in the car and are quickly removable. Perfect for Auto-X use.

lol, thought some would notice...i went to a car expo in seattle and they were giving away some stuff away at the scion stand. the wrist band was actually a cel fone holder with the bottom cut out.

i stuck it on there, and never took it off...lol

Version 2.0:

Updated knee board pads

Left knee pad, sewed pad, a cleaner look.

redid the right knee board pad, with a 1/2" thick foam, much better.

I think this is my final revision

Nice solution to a problem!

How 'bout velcro-ing your knees together, that oughta solve it....

I have a Sparco seat that I can RR in less than 10 mins and it, along with my 5 pt harness, really solves the problem.

Look for a nice seat that fits you. Make sure you get the rails etc to make the swap quik and easy.
