Default Upgrading Seats to Fix Bobble head *Pics*!

Well after seeing a couple threads on here about how to cure the bobble head effect I figured I would post a "HOW TO" on what I did to cure MOST of the bobble head problem that I could not stand any longer!

First, I went to my local HW store and bought some foam. I actually just bought some sleeping/camping foam.

Removed the seat after some battles with the wireing clips (Just yank!)

Then I placed the seat and cut a piece of foam about 1.5-2 feet long by 1-1.5 foot wide.

The foam was 2 inches think and I folded it in half so I had a total of 2+2= 4 inches of foam!

I then grabed a hammer (for grip) and streached the springs on the bottom of the seat.

I then folded my foam in half and proceeded to stuff it under the seat as showed below:

I then continued to message it down. The easiest way to do this I found was to actually pull it over top of the first spring untill you even get it over the second spring. Then I went back and it was much easier to get it under the springs as there is more slack!

Just keep pulling it down until you get it to where you want it!

Now I took it one step further.... I had ZAP straps on there before the foam as you can see in some of the pictures of them cut off!

However, I don't think this really helped at all because the springs never really even touched the straps....

At this point if you push your hand down on the seat top (where your butt goes) there is still A LOT of spring play/rebound/trampoline effect!

Hense my re-use of the zap straps:

However, I did notice that the bar at the bottom was bent from when I had the zap straps on before as shown here:

I tightened them up with a pair of plyers and then finally cut the tops off:

RESULT: Right away, I noticed that I had to put the seat down to the lowest setting! I'm about 5 10' and 185lb's so if you are taller than I am, you might not want to put in as much foam because the seat does get raised quite a bit!

You def sit on top of the seat now and not in it! At first it wasn't very comfortable but after about 10 min of driving I ether got used to it, or the seat started to settle a little bit!

I'm going to assume that the foram will also settle/compress the more I sit in it...

I did notice an improvement in the amount of bobble head I experience.

I went down a road that I used to dread driving on and it wasn't so bad!

It's not 100% fixed (hence my signature and what I want to buy next!) however, I think its a great start for CHEAP!

Thanks,

Jay

nice writeup. but why would you want to sit on the seat instead of in it? This is the problem with the stock seats. You slide around in them under lateral loads.

I'm not sure if sitting "on" it is any better and you are right that it is probably worse... I actually found the stock seats quite comfortable!!

However, there is WAY too much spring/bounch/trampoline effect the way they are...

By stretching the springs and filling in the gap with foam you essentially reduce the amount of bounce they are able to produce.

Over time I'll see how the foam settles and if it compresses enough so I sit more "in" the seat great....

However, if it doesn't, then I may take one of the layers out to lower the hight!

Hope that helps...

Jay

i definitely agree that there is too much trampoline effect. This seems like a good low buck fix. But the best fix as anyone knows is new seats. It covers all the bases.

I think this mod would be perfect with just one layer added. Folding it over prior to installing it maybe too thick. But great right up. Any comments on re-installing the fabric clips??

I did the same thing using pipe insulation foam and about 3X the straps. I'm much happier to not have the bobble head and it's worth sitting up higher. I'm only 5'9" so it doesn't bother me that much.

If an aftermarket seat offered side airbags I'd be willing to swap them out completely. Until then or someday a roll cage when it's not a daily driver my stockers are staying in.
