Post How to: changing rear diff oil

How to: changing rear diff oil
How to was created using a STi USDM 2004.

RECOMMENDED: GO take a 5 min ride with you car before doing this, so the oil will be a bit hot and will drain MUCH quicker.

NOTE: This should read "sealant" instead of "scellant."

Subaru recommends GL-5 oil. Motul is GL-5 approved.

Press down where the arrow points, and pull that clip towards you.

Remember these 2 holes

Place your oil pan under the read diff. Take your 30 mm wrench and wrench counter-clockwise to remove the plug.

Filthy! Dirty plug!

After you removed the plug, you will see some oil drip.

Take the 1/2 torq bar and unscrew the DRAIN plug. Just break the plug loose.

Turn the torq wrench towards you (as if it was a big screwdriver) and turn it counter-clock wise to remove the DRAIN plug.

Let the oil drip for a good 5 min. Ernest sayz: EWWWWWWWWWWWW! LOOK AT TEH OIL COLORRRRRRR!

You can inspect your DRAIN plug while the oil drains. It's actually a magnet that collects little metal shavings. Clean it up!

Clean both the hole up with a towel.

Put some thread sealant on the DRAIN plug. Not too too much.
Tip: Apply teflon in the opposite direction (counter clockwise) when ready to thread the plug. From aztlan-lt1

I torq'ed it to 45lbs and it seemed fine. Now FILL the rear diff with your new MOTUL oil.
Fill it till some oil starts coming out.
Put some thread scellant on the FILL plug and put the FILL plug back in.

You are DONE!

Real easy change...except pumping the oil back in!

And it really does smell as bad as advertised. Blergh.

Edited to say thanks for the great writeup...I very much appreciate pictoral walkthroughs!

just remember to remove the cap if you use a pre-opened bottle of fluid
i had to drain it out once after launching the cap into my diff housing. that was pretty scary/ stupid

I did this 2 weekend ago. It is pretty easy actually. I didnt have a pump to put the fluid back into the diff, so I just used a funnel and a long hose. My dad poured the diff fluid into the funnel and I stayed underneith the car to make sure it had enough in it. Worked pretty well!

Nice write up though!
