You mean how you used the timing belt to remove the cam gears?

My Intake Cam Puller

And I was able to borrow the subaru cam puller from a local shop so tomorrow I can pull the cams out and get the heads off...

I have one question.. how do you get your plastic Cam gears off... the pic shows how to remove the intake cams... i was just wondering because both the intake cam gears broke loose with the belt on... and the plastic ones just wanted to skip a few teeth..

is there any good way to strap the belt with clamps??

I borrowed the cam wrench from a local shop to do the exhaust cams... Even with that it was a TOTAL *****... You can use the timing belt the same way they use it on the intake cams as the exhaust cams though...

i did it the exact same way i did my intake cams with the old belt. i wouldnt leave it on the motor i would take it off and do it the way i pictured, if it jump more than 3 teeth youd be in trouble.

**** bro.. Just tryed it like 10 different ways with up to 4 Good Clamps... The gear always seems to wana Skip teeth on the belt and get loose.. I had it as tight as i possibly could.. the clamps even dug into the belt a bit!

the exhaust sprocket under the one your big tool is one actually broke a few teeth off it!!! Dammit the other one is perfectly fine for now.. besides the fact i cant get it loose!! should I just break the gear off the broken one??

another thing.. I got the most trq on the bolt when the belt was timed, even then i had a long cheater bar, and those things are on there unusually hard.. with the clamps it never seemed to get as tight as it was before i took off the belt. lets say worst case.... what would it damage if it skips massive amounts of teeth.. Just the valves faces and stems? or would i be looking into new heads here? Another thing what else are some options if i cant seem to get them off your way... Break the gear off buy new ones, and save on valves and heads?

EDIT:!! Okay so i took a break for a night and came back today.. I used actually 5 clamps and really tore into that timing belt.. and Very quickly Snaped that bolt loose... So yes the straps are a great method!!

The other thing i would have said is to leave the spark plugs in, that way there is a little compression holding the motor from spinning a bit

Heads are back from machine shop... Tomorrow is assembly & reinstall!!

you can feel behind it to see if the input shaft lines up with the clutch and you can see the bottom studs go into the trans. once its close you can suck it down with some trans bolts onto the dowel pins that hopefully you sanded all the rust off of.

So you DID suck it down with the trans bolts?? I started doing that, but it didnt seem right... Hell, I removed the lower studs because they were bent a little... I still cant get it... I used the clutch alignment tool, but it has a little slop in it, so i'm wondering if it is not lined up...

a better/more secure way to lock the engine in place is to take a length of clothesline or similar rope and push a portion of it into the cylinder via the plug hole. when the piston comes up it will be stopped by the clothesline and prevent the crank from rotating any further. when you're done, just pull it out.

i wouldnt do it to a good motor either way in fear of the amount of torque pressed against the bearings with 0 oil pressure. the bearings are extremely soft.
