Default Kool Brake Kit : Heat Shield Mod

So, i went to install my RCE Kool Brake Kit yesterday (following this how-to). After I got the first side started, I got to thinking about some of the threads in which people talked about removing the shield behind the rotor. Some people who have removed the shield have had issues with cooking the tie rod ends and axle boot. But, it seems to me that this is not a dust shield or a shield to protect objects from hitting the back side of the rotor. To me it looks more like a heat shield to keep radiant heat from getting to the axle boot, tie rod ends, and ABS speed sensor. So, I decided to modify the shield to work with the Kool Brake Kit. It was rather simple. Just cut a hole in the shield. I think the below pics are self explanatory.

Also Note: I took caliper temps at Streets of Willow Springs 2 weeks ago before the kit was installed. Air temp was around 80ºF and the calipers got up to around 450ºF. Very close to boiling the fluid, though I experienced no fade. I am running PF01 pads.

I have another 2 day event on June 2nd and 3rd. I will gather caliper temps (with the ducts and shields in place) after day one and post the results. And if I have time, I will remove the shields completely for day two and see what the difference is.

Please comment if you have specific questions.

Jared

Line up the holes of the duct to the shield...

A look inside...

From the other side... and as you can see, there is already vents in the shield. This is the where the rotor breathes.

I traced the inside of the duct onto the shield.

Handy jig saw.

A file and some sandpaper to clean up the metal edges. (I would have painted the edges of the bare metal if I had the time.)

A look through the duct...

Installed.

A look through from the front side, before the rotor was put back in place.

A view looking through the duct to the back side of the installed rotor.

Wide shot also looking through the duct.

A shot of the new Alcon Temperature Strips.

Finished!

Update:

So I ran a 2 day event at Streets of Willow over the weekend. I had the KBK ducts bolted in place with my heat shield mod, but without any hoses. (I did not have time to run the hoses so I just went without.) I am happy to say that my rotors still ran much cooler than without the mod. Here are the details:

WITHOUT the KBK on a 78º day at Streets of Willow CCW, my calipers reached 450º.

WITH the KBK (no hoses installed) on a 103º day at Streets of Willow CCW, my calipers only reached 430º.

Yes, it was 100º on Saturday, and 103º on Sunday. The Sunday track configuration was CCW, and more harsh on the brakes. It was on Sunday when the temp strips finally started to creep up. I speculate that if it was only 78º with the KBK ducts and no hoses ran, that the caliper temps would have been closer to 400º, and when I do install the hoses, much lower of course.

Spazegun.. The temp strips are on the outside Calipers (see pics above). You can easily see them through the BBS wheels. Maybe next time I will put strips on the inside too just to see what the difference is between the in and outsides of the caliper. Let me know if you meant something else.

I will post pics when I do get the hose installed.

The temp strips are great. You bought those from Hoerr Racing? It's right around the corner from my house, I may have to swing by and pick those up. Do the strips last the whole day or just one temp cycle?

The stips just turn black as the temp rises. If you want to 'reset' the strip... you peel it off and stick on a new one. ;-)
