Default Speaker Replacement?

Sup fellas. I was wondering if anybody out there could help me swap out the stock crappy speakers in my STI. I have a pair of 6.5" and a pair of 5.25" coaxle polk audio speakers from a system I had in a car a long time ago, and im posative they are 1000% better than the stock speakers.

Tips for removing the door panels? Dos? Don'ts? Tools? Will anything custom need to be done, or will they go right into the stock holes?

Thanks for any help i can get.

-Brandon

This thread shows you how to do the rears. Just reverse the process for the fronts.. How to install 6.5" speakers in the rear door!

You may need some spacers for your front 6.5" speakers. Kartboy and IAPerformance sell spacers.

It will be a bit different than this. to get 6-1/2" speakers into the front you wont need to do any cutting, and I think that the rear doors accomodate 5-1/4" without cutting and without spacers. The spacer in the front will be tricky. I'm in the process of gathering material to upgrade my stereo as well, and the fronts are the only thing worrying me...

The fronts should worry. They are a PITA to install. Our front doors are soo shallow. Spacers are generally needed unless you can find a high end 6.5" that can fit it. Most shops carry the tool to get the panel off. I'm looking at the Infinity Kappa 6.1 component system for the fronts and leaving the rear as is. Only problem with the Kappa's is that they desire power. If you have the money, look into the Helix components. I doubt your Polk stuff will fit into the factory location w/o spacers. Let me know how it turns out. I'm looking into the Kappa's for the front w/ my Coustic 240SE, 10" RE sub and a Audison 400.1 for the bass in the trunk. Can't believe how underpar our stock system is. The PT Cruiser I'm renting has a far superior stock system. What a shame. Make sure you spend the extra $ and get the doors sound dampened while you're installing the speakers.

I just did a speaker swap a couple weekends ago on my '04 STi w/ the Polk DB650 and DB525. i used the mounting kit from IAPerformance, and everything went in w/o a hitch. They had the spacers, the brackets to mount everything and made it all a breeze.

NOW... i have to find the mounts that you hook up to the stereo b/c my stereo was stolen out of my car on saturday night..anyone have an idea where i can get the mounts cheep and quick?

Did you sound dampen the doors when you did your install? Also, how do I find out what speakers will fit into the doors with or w/o the spacers?

i have not dampened them yet....and for the speaker mounting size...Sorry, but i had to do a little research around the net to find out the actual mounting depths (but dont remember where i had found all the info, some on this site, and some elsewhere).. BUT when i did find out, that is also when i found out about IAPerformance's kit was the thing for the job. There were NO cutting of the door or any other modding whatsoever. I was not sure about the spacers til i mounted the rear 5.25" speakers. That is where i had to use the spacers. But like i said w/ the kit, it all went in w/o a hitch... they had the square pegs to fit in the holes for screwing into. the mounts were flawless.

Update: according to IAPerformance's Site:

Front:
6.5" Cutout Diameter6.5" Mounting Depth5.0" - 5.90"0"-2.92"
Rear:

5.25" Rear adapters fit speakers
  • Up to 4.61" Cutout Diameter (over this size and metal cutting may be needed)
  • Infinite mounting depth

I was looking to get those same speakers for the fronts and rear. Did you run an amp with the speakers? Or you running it off the HeadUnit. How's it sound vs stock?

Yea..i found that out yesterday...unfortuntately my local dealership DOES NOT KNOW ANYTHING about Subaru. The first guy i talked to at the dealership actually told me that i may have to buy the whole friggin stereo, and that maybe they come with it. So i called, from what i was told, the best dealership in my area, actually 100 miles away, in Atlanta, and they were really helpful, and i posted the actual part numbers under the "forester din pocket" thread...along with the part number for that din pocket as well, for future folks to reference, if need be...and you are right, each bracket was about 5 bucks a piece. Thanks for replying to my question.

Is there a way to get 6.5 in the rear with out cutting the metal, i would like that to be my last option. I have a set of polk db6501 components and really dont want to go buy another set. THanks in advance
