Default Crank Pulley Bolt Stuck?

OK, so I am trying to do the Perrin pulley. I put the big 1/2 drive breaker bar on car in 5th, wife pressing on the brakes and could not get it to break loose. So then I put a huge wrench on the end of the breaker bar (same as using a pipe) and reefed on it like crazy. From everything I've read it shouldn't be on THAT tight. I'm concerned that the bolt may break. Anyone else have such a stuborn time geting that bolt off?

Get some PB Blaster! Spray it on the bolt, follow instructions. Works like a charm. ALWAYS use PB Blaster, always! I promise you it will save a lot of grief. You can get it at most auto supply stores. Bill

We used it on the crank bolt when we put on the Perrin pulley on my wifes '06 STI.

So these bolts never break?

I'll spray it with some blaster and let it sit a while.

Crank pulley bolts are a PITA. We removed the one on my roomates prelude. We had the jack handle as a breaker bar and it bent 90 degrees before breaking loose.

Are they normal or reversed threads on our cars?

Ok if you're daring you can try what I did on my buddy's 3000GT when I put his pulley on. Now I'm not even sure if this will work on our cars and it's really not the safest or smartest thing to do either.......

If you can't get the bolt off with an impact gun try this: (I'm not making any guarantees)

Get a long enough breaker bar and brace it against something like the subframe, depending on which way the motor turns. With the bar braced against the frame, crank the motor for a split second, not even a full rotation! That should be enough to break the bolt loose. Just make sure you have an impact socket on the bolt tho, because you'll prob snap a regular socket.

I admit, it's not the smartest or safest thing to do by any means, but it worked. Although his crank pulley bolt was Grade 8, but I have no clue what's on our cars.

Long breaker bar, long cheater bar, and have someone bump the starter. And I mean bump it..for a split second. DO NOT START THE ENGINE.

The crank bolt just gets tight as hell from heat cycles and everything else it goes through. Its by no means easy to get it off. Just be glad you dont have to mess with the cam gear bolts!

Wow anything worse than the stock downpipe removal, I refuse to do.. lol..But I guess one really tight bolt is better than a whole bunch. I'm getting the biggiest breaker bar I can find next time in the auto store!..

Agreed on that. I am 6'2 220lbs and I had to crank on it pretty hard with a breaker bar and a cheater bar on top of that. I thought I was going to break something when I tried to get it off, but kept pushing and eventually it came loose.

I thought I was crazy when I did my pulley I had the same problem with the crank bolt I thought I was going to snap it. I wound up taking an impact socket on a 1/2 inch breaker bar and like a 4 foot section of pipe. I was literaly standing away from the car pushing on it so hard that the car started to move foward even with someone standing on the brakes. BIG PITA

unfortunantly for sti's you cant get a gun in there unless you take the radiator out. oh and turning your motor over to break the bolt lose is the worst way to do that.
