Wink How to do a rear diff fluid change AND tranny for a WRX!

Well, Since I just got a WRX 2004 WRB I decided to do a change.
I have NO IDEA when was the last time it was done so I decided to do it regardless. For the rear diff, I decided to stay with the REGULAR OEM fluid, and for the Tranny fluid I went with Mobil 1 Synthetic.
First of all I will start with the rear differential.
Materials needed:

* 1 liter of SUBARU LSD differential Fluid.

---------------------------------------------------------------------
* 1 Fluid Pump. It is required as you cannot use a funnel, well not a regular funnel anyhow. I decided to get this one since it seems to work great with other people.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

* 1/2" Wrench (Not pictured)
* Obviously an oil container. (Not pictured)

* I did not have to jack the car at all. My car is stock and the height and all is great to change the fluid with no jacks needed.

Procedure:

* First part is to take the FILL UP plug off the diff. For a WRX it's much simpler compared to an STi. First off you need a 1/2" wrench. Both plugs are exactly the same size. You can dip your finger in it to check how much you have and the color....mine was pink on my fingers but once we flushed it it was more of a brownish color.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
* Second part is to Finally take the DRAIN Plug (BOTTOM) from the diff. Notice that you may need to use WD40 to loosen both bolts.
* Finally, let it drain as shown in the pic.

Next part is to clean the plugs.
Notice in the picture the one with all the metal shavings, that's the BOTTOM nut as it has a magnet to take all the shavings. Use WD40 or other liquid to clean until they're clean such as the second picture.

After letting the fluid out, make sure to put the DRAIN Plug First and consequently fill it up.
Please note:
* MOST SITES AND DIRECTIONS SAY TO USE 0.8 LITERS OF THE LSD FLUID, MAKE SURE YOU FILL IT UP TO THE BOTTOM TIP OF THE FILL PLUG. YOU DO NOT WANT TO OVER FILL IT AND HAVE IT SPILLED ALL OVER YOU.

* STI USERS: I BELIEVE THIS IS SOMEWHAT SIMILAR BUT YOU HAVE PLUGS IN THOSE NUTS. I COULD BE WRONG BUT THE PROCEDURE SHOULD BE THEORETICALLY THE SAME.

* STI USERS: I AM ALSO POSITIVE THAT YOU MAY HAVE TO JACK YOUR VEHICLE AS IT IS NOT AS LOW AS REGULAR WRX's.

FRONT DIFFERENTIAL/ TRANNY FLUID CHANGE.

This is a little more complicated. WRX owners have it easier again, we only have ONE plug as opposed to two in the STi's.
ALso, if you get a funnel that has a rubber hose, you do NOT need to remove the intercooler. I believe STI owners can prob do the samething but your intercooler is much bigger therefore you may have to remove it either way.

PLEASE NOTE:
Depending on the year/model of your WRX you may have either a T-70 TORX BIT or a 21 MM socket. I really don't know exactly the distribution of the years and what not so you may have to look before you do anything. Also, you can get the SUBARU PART # 803926070 which is the metal washer for the bolt. STi Owners you have a different part number but I believe it's relatively the same.

Materials needed:

* 4 Quartz of oil. This is depending on your taste and even quantity. Some people put 5 quartz as it's believed to protect it more. I personally had around 4.2 and I didn't feel like keeping 0.2 in the bottle. I used Mobil Synthetic 75W30 which retails between $6-9 depending on the store.

* For my 2004 WRX I used a T60 Torx bit. It will work but you have to be careful, YOU MAY need a 21MM socket it really depends on your model so I'd look before anything.

* FUNNEL. I bought this one so I didn't have to remove the intercooler.

* OEM Subaru metal washer (Part number is shown, this is for WRX only and I believe STi's are different.)

Procedure:

* Remove the dipstick from under the intercooler and place it in a safe place. This is done so air goes in while it's flushing and it reduces the chances of oil around your work area. The oil should come out nice and easy as oppose to being sucked in for air etc, etc.

* Locate the bolt. It's right UNDER the engine and you cannot miss it. Mine looked like this:

* Loosen the bolt, you may have to use WD40. After you loosen it, remove it and let it drain.

* This bolt also has a metal shaving magnet. Please clean it just like you should have done for the rear diff. After cleaned it should look like the pic.

* Put washer in the bolt and plug it. Make sure you tighten it to OEM Specifications.

* Next thing is to fill the tranny with the fluid. You can see how my funnel worked for me. It was annoying but not that hard.

* AGAIN, STi OWNERS COULD HAVE A SIMILAR PROCEDURE THIS IS EXCLUSIVELY FOR A 2004 WRX BUT MOST WRX SHOULD BE PRETTY MUCH SIMILAR.

I'm NOT responsible for any possible damage that could happen to your car. This is strictly a guide and should be followed ONLY at your OWN risk. Remember to never get under a car without supervision. Also remember to follow safe guidelines such as jacking up the car the right way using jackstands and gloves for possible burns.

ENJOY!
