IWSTI Addict since: Oct 2004 | Any chance we can get a updated how to for the 2008 model with pics? Also with people saying the jack stands should go inboard of the pinch seam are they meaning towards the center of the car and right up flush against the pinch seam? Thanks. |

| Platinum Member Feedback Score: 11 reviews | I have been meaning to update for the GR, but it could be awhile. I'm trying to figure out the front-center point, the tech info shows it in the same place as the GD, but it appears to be half covered by the plastic shroud. I just put the jack there anyway and it seemed to work well enough. |

IWSTI Addict since: Oct 2004 | Austin is what I circled in red what you are talking about for the front jack point? This picture was taken from just behind the driver side front wheel. This is the area right behind the pinch seam. There seems to be a small area with 2 indentions as seen circled in the picture below. Would this be where the front jacks stands go? This was taken just in front of the dirver side rear wheel. Is this where the jack stands go in the back? Im a visual learner so pictuers really help me :-) |

| Platinum Member Feedback Score: 11 reviews | first pic is the front jackpoint; it is the bolt in the center that gives me pause; depending on the shape of the jack dish it almost looks like the car could be resting on that bolt. I don't think it is as bad as it looks though. The service manual diagram shows a block of wood being used in the front, maybe use a block between the jack and the car, on the two bumps that aren't covered by plastic? I'm not going to speculate on the jack stand points, those would make sese to me, but maybe someone else can confirm. |

IWSTI Addict since: Apr 2007 | Don't put your jack stands just inside of the pinch weld seams. That looks highly unstable if someone shook the car side to side. The engineers designed the reinforced pinch welds for jack stands. Dealerships use these points for jacking your vehicle up for service. Your ownership manual will tell you to jack up the vehicle at the reinforced pinch welds. You can modify the jack stand head to have more interference with the inside surface instead of the pinch weld edge, but I would never place the jack stand completely inside the pinch weld. The key is to make sure you lower your vehicle slowly onto the jack stands so that the reinforced pinch welds don't buckle. In any case, I throw extra support under the car as a fail safe if I'm crawling under. If I leave the wheels on, I just put 2 to 3 2x12s under each tire in case of jack stand or pinch weld failure. |

IWSTI Addict since: Jan 2008 | I just watched the HSPN video on bleeding brake fluid. At the very end when he lowers the car from the jack, he removed some sort of adapter where the pinch weld joint is as well as where he had jacked up the car. Does anyone know what that is? I was thinking of taking a 2x4 and cutting a slot thru it where the pinch weld would sit and then either jack it from there or to place the stand on. Only thing I'd worry with the stand is that it'd slip so it might not work for that. |

IWSTI Addict since: Jan 2009 | i use the inside pinch weld on my 08 no problems so far, its been up like 10 times now since ive bought it. only time ive had to watch how hard i rocked it was pushing on the tire to realign the rear subframe holes. working on getting bolts loose (even the lower control arm bolt for the rear sway install) has never been an issue so far. i do only have 2 stands t hough and only front or rear is up at a time dunno if that would make a difference in stability. those pics are right, the center bolt doesnt get in the way, just aim for that metal part it pertrudes out rubber padded jack doesnt harm anything. only things i watch for is where the car moves as you lower it, it can put the stand off alignment from the reenforcement. i stop with slight weight and check first, only lower fully if its on the bump and sitting proper. and make sure the stands are sitting on all 4 legs when you first set em up, not crooked from getting pushed up against the pinch weld. |

IWSTI Addict since: May 2009 | I just recently bought an 07 STi and changed the oil for the first time today. I jacked it up with no problem and got the front and rear jackstands up, but I just have a question about placement for the front jackstands. Here are pics of the right and left front like I placed them, but I'm not sure if I should move them a little towards the front of the car to where the arrows indicate. The jack stands are wide enough to go around the indentations with the circular "R" and "L" letters in them, but I don't know if that's a better spot or if it even matters. Thanks! |

IWSTI Addict since: Feb 2009 | I just had my STI up on jack stands last weekend for an oil change/tire rotation. I placed the jack stands on the pinch welds just like in the first post of this thread and had no problems at all with anything bending or becoming damaged. I tried to place the stands on the inside of the pinch welds as suggested in this thread but I didn't feel like the stands were making good contact with those areas and it didn't feel as safe. The car felt very stable with the welds resting in the jack stands and if you lower the car onto them slowly and evenly, I don't see anything becoming bent or damaged. |

IWSTI Addict since: Mar 2009 | Ok here's my take: I think the pinch seams are the best place to put the jack stands. But the surface area of the top of the stand is not enough to ease my concern on pinch seam bending. So I put a 5" piece of "uni strut" with a 1/8" glued layer of rubber on top of the jack stand. The strut just slides over the top of the stand and distributes the weight of the car much better/safer. If you put your car on a car lift, the same principal applies. The glue I used in the pics was a little weak and the rubber has since been re-glued. The rubber "mat" provides a non marring surface as well as gives the pinch seam more "grip" to the jack stand to prevent slippage. I'm sure you could find "uni-strut" at any construction part supplier. To the pics. I place all the jack stand under the factory "jacking points" FWIW. -joe |
