There are like 3-4 thicknesses of sheet metal in that area, so I don't think there is a huge risk of it bending over... but generally I agree, I would rather find some alternate solid points. And I always have backup in place in case of failure, such as leaving the jack under the car somewhere (backed off a bit so it isn't supporting any weight) - extra pair of jackstands, whatever.

Part of the reason for starting the thread was to hopefully to get some pics (hint) of some other jackstand locations.

I hate the idea of using a chunk of wood - wood splits. I have also heard of using slotted hockey pucks for the same thing. I would really like to see a (metal) product that adapts from the stand to the seam, sort of a sleeve that caps the stand and has a slotted fitting like the OEM jack.

They make this adapter for floor jacks, but I have not seen anything similar for jackstands.

If you buy the "deluxe" jackstands that Craftsman sells they have more of a pronounced U shape to them which fits nicely around the pinch in the front and rear jacking points so they don't get any more smooshed then they they already are.

Wait until they are on sale and they are only a few bucks more then the cheaper standard jackstands Craftsman sells.

sears had a sale on some really nice 3 ton jack stands mentioned above with a deep notch in the cradle to help prevent the pinch weld from crushing badly. 17.95 for a pair.

I bent the same rail on my Celica fairly easily with just the jack alone... I actually switched to using my crap OEM jack anytime I had to lift up the car, harder to get the car up but it lifts the car really well and I just left it in place as a jack stand (and used another OEM jack if I needed to lift in 2 places).

if the pinch weld is bent already, why bother using the OEM jack? That seems pretty dumb to me, especially if it's more difficult to use.

I don't like using the pinch welds, and I don't have an adapter so after watching a tire shop lift my car one day, I put my floor jack in a spot just inward of each pinch weld.

This is a picture of the left front wheel with the floor jack in place:

There's a row of four bolts surrounded by plastic. The 3rd one from the front is raised (which you can see in the picture), and I put the jack on the bolt behind it.

I've used it several times now to swap wheels with no flexing, creaking, or other scary noises . Of course, now that I've posted the picture someone will probably say I've done irreparable damage to my car .
