Yeah, it is definitely not a power mod by itself. I suspect it would tune better being less restrictive though. It is louder with a aftermarket dropin with stock exhaust otherwise I think a TBE would drown it out.

The only concern with taking every thing out is that you will now pull hot air from the engine compartment and lose HP. This is a concern in the summer time as as engine temps rise and you build up heat while idling in traffic, etc....without ducting to the front of the car thru the snorkle or to the wheel well you now pull air from the engine compartment..... HAI (Hot Air Intake)

Default Karl for you...

Like the one guy previously mentioned now, about taking the "whole thing" out.

I also would like to know why guys are bothering sawing off and filling up holes etc... when you can just remove the pieces entirely?

You talk about POSSIBLE hotter air coming in from the fender side, but then I say this? For everyone with aftermarket CAIs.
Thats EXACTLY where they go? Their cone filters sit basically exactly where this elbow etc... now sit?

So surely if people are ok using CAI systems and no problem with hot air? Then surely just leaving the elbow and silencer off will be the same thing?

There's a couple schools of thought here. True CAI's have the air filter located down inside the wheel well and truly get cool air. The sawed off elbow we've discussed in this thread pulls cool air from this location as well.

Short ram systems are not CAI's and their filters are located in the engine compartment. Some of the short ram systems attempt to block hot air from the engine with rubber dams, for example, K&N Typhoon. This is a popular upgrade but is definitely not a CAI.

i cut the big tumor and instalded the U shaped snorkel without filling up the whole. i don't hear any sound differences.
i have a friend that put the SPT intake and that thing realy makes a difference, you can realy hear the turbo and the BPV

Thanks for the walkthrough! I just did this mod. I took the wheel off and it was a piece of cake once I found those damn nuts. I removed the large tumor and then cut off the malignant part. I put back on the remaining piece with hole open. Went for a drive and am stoked on the sound of the BPV and turbo. I only heard it a few times before, and even then it was just barley audible, now it's easy to hear it blow off or bypass or whatever it does. Love those DIY's mods.

Yes the SPT allows more sound thru and most short rams will too....K&N probably the best. However, there are plenty pf posts around about the loss of performance with the SPT so I personally would not go that route. Also short rams are more likely to be hot air intakes. If you want more noise witht the stock box and hacked silencer a K&N drop in (and other hi flow filters) makes a big difference.
