Manual transmission oil level can be checked with the car running or shut off. I highly recommend checking with the engine shut off, and even more highly recommend waiting a while after you shut it off to check the oil, because you have to reach right down past the turbocharger and downpipe, and that stuff gets mondo hot.

4.3 quarts for the trans
1.0 - 1.2 quarts for the rear diff

Recommended gear oil: Use GL-5 or equivalent. Gear oil capacity: 4.1 L (4.3 US qt. 3.6 Imp. qt.)

I just changed out the tranny fluid with Royal Purple, I only put in 4quarts and the fluid is a little over the line. I bought 5 quarts so I could meet the 4.3 quarts recommended in the post but I didn't have to touch the 5th at all. My car is on jacks at all 4 corners, will I be ok?

Ok so if you change your Transmission Fluid you are already doing the front diff as well ??

Its a good idea to put about a quart less oil in first, then measure it and slowly add bit by bit, measuring in between to hit the full mark. Overfilling it would really suck, especially if the car is already back off the jack stands.

Oh yea, DONT get under the car without it being held up firmly by jackstands. (Not just a jack, it can fail with you under the car)

After buying a couple of funnels and finding they did not fit I was getting frustrated. In this thread two people had referenced, "A funnel like this really helps make the job easier."

Just seeing a picture I wanted to know where to get the funnel that people swear by. I also did not want to remove my TMIC since I hate messing with it. So, I did some investigating (thankfully one individual mapped the picture from the web site they bought it from) and found the funnel referenced in this How to: Change Transmission Fluid (with Pics) post. Here is the link for anybody that wants the funnel that is highly recommended: http://www.usplastic.com/catalog/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=USPlastic&category%5Fna me=25425&product%5Fid=12590

Search the Drivetrain forum for recommendations. There are a ton of threads in there about it.

Here's one to start with:
What fluids for the drivetrain?
