Why is it that when I told the guys at the Subaru dealership about the two spots to drain the fluid, they had no idea that there were two. They only gave me the washer for the pan and had to special order the other one because they have NEVER stocked it.

Same thing happened to me. The guy had no clue about the other one and had to order it. He said "Well, we do trans fluid changes here all the time and we've never stocked that one before". The guy said they've never even heard about it. Makes you wonder.....

Since you fill in only one spot and drain in two spots does that mean that tranny, rear diff and front diff all take the same fluid? And what is the GL-5 rating that quicksilverSTI is talking about?

To answer your questions...

Tranny and front diff use the same oil pan and both require an oil with a GL-5 rating (see below).

Rear Diff is separate and requires LSD Gear Oil (STi specific) such as found on this page http://www.subaruparts.com/catalog/?section=366

The following excerpt regarding GL-5 rating was taken form the API (American Petroleum Institute) PUBLICATION 1560
"API GL-5
The designation API GL-5 denotes lubricants intended for gears, particularly hypoid (see note) gears, in axles operating under various combinations of high-speed/shock load and low-speed/high-torque conditions.
Note: Frictional requirements for axles equipped with limited-slip differentials are normally defined by the axle manufacturer."

Hopefully this answers your questions and doesn't confuse you more.

Yea, the front diff and trans share the same oil. The rear diff uses LSD specific oil. Speedstyle pretty much summed it up.

cool thanks. SO should be the same even for an 07 like mine that changed to Torsen style differential rather than helical? Or should I do some research lol.

Research is always a good thing. Everbody seems to have different opinions when it comes to stuff like which fluids to use so I always consult my service and owners manuals before doing anything.

question: is there any potential problem with having it filled over the full mark? mine is just a little over when cold and i didn't want to try and drain just a tiny bit so i left it and haven't noticed any issues.

Haha I know, I forgot to take a pic of it and I didn't feel like putting the car back up in the air again.
