It's a *great* upgrade if you like track days and autocrosses. My wheel bearings started feeling crappy through the brake pedal with 10k miles on the car and only four hours of track time.

Mykl and others who've done the 04.5 upgrade, can you come up with a parts list of items required to perform the swap. Got 2 many things to do to search this morning. Been considering this option and had hope to be able to complete it when I add the springs and camber plates. But will be considering it as the '07-'08 winter project and want to start the parts buying process.

My concerns are:
Will I need to change frt struts, any or all axles. I know I'll need wheels and have seen the 6Gun kit, but what other items need to be considered.

As always any and all suggestions, concerns is appreciated.

Well, I bought the 6Gun kit, so in addition to that I needed brake rotors, wheels, and '05+ compatible struts.

If you don't buy 6Gun's kit, you need everything that's in the kit aside from the adapters. But Subaru played some axle trickery on the '04 STi's. For the '04 model year there were two different types of axles. The early '04's had a female style axle, meaning there was a shaft protruding from the gearbox that stuck into the axle. The later '04 STi's had a male type axle, just like every other STi that came to the U.S. after it.

Now, I *think* an '05+ axle will work in place of an '04 axle that has a 6Gun adapter on it if you have the later male axle type equipped car. I don't know how the early female type axles work, but from pictures it looks like you *might* be able to pull the stub part out of the gearbox and stick an '05+ male axle in there, but you'll have to experiment for yourself.

What makes the 6Gun kit nice is that it saves you a few hundred bucks on new axles since they include an adapter to make your '04 axles work.

A little more...

If you have the correct suspension parts and correct bolt battern for the wheels and brakes, everything up front literally just bolts together. It's very, very easy. If you can install coilovers, you can do this.

The only trick to doing the front is getting the adapter with ABS gear in place, which is quite easy if you know the trick, which is...

The '05 hub/bearing is a single unit, as you probably already know. To press the adapter/gear back on to the axle all you need to do is slip the hub/bearing unit over the axle, put the axle nut on, and start turning the axle nut. Basically you're sandwiching the hub/bearing in between the nut and the adapter/gear. When you turn the nut it presses on the hub/bearing which presses the adapter/gear into place.

For the rears... that's a bit of a pain. If you don't have access to a decent hydraulic press it *might* be worth finding a machine shop that will do the press work for you. But if you've got a press, and some time, it's not difficult at all. Although the drum style parking brake is a bit of a pain... just keep your patience and it's no big deal.

Yesterday I picked up 2 sets of 05 STi hubs that were machined for the 5x100 pattern. 1 set is headed to a customer in Itally and the second will hang out here for a bit and then end up on one of the TiC cars.

I believe that some folks are still going to go for the full conversion to get wide wheels; but swapping just the front shocks, knuckles, and hubs is going to make this conversion dramatically easier, cheaper, and available to all the WRX folks.

We will have some more details on the web page soon.

From another thread:

If by other bits you mean the rotors and wheels, yes.
WRX owners will now be able to swap as well because they can keep their rear hubs (05 5x114.3 rear hubs need R180 outer axles).

Yeah, to do the swap you will need machined front hubs, collars for the speedo gear relocation, and the stock 05 STi front knuckles. I have a few customers that are in the process of planning a swap now and when I told them about the new option they still wanted the wide wheels in 5x114.3 however i think that alot of folks are going to enjoy cheaper, stronger and self replaceable front hubs.

Why not just get the wheels redrilled? I had 114 wheels redrilled to 112 with no problem. Can 114 wheels be redrilled to 110?

I have never heard of redrilling wheels. Rotors yes but not wheels.

It can be done. I bought Work Emotion CR wheels which only come in 5x114. My old Audi A4 had a 5x112 bolt pattern. I bought the wheels from Supreme Power Parts in Placentia, CA. He had the wheels redrilled for me, so I don't know the actual process. I do know that my rotors were never touched. Its worth a shot if you don't want to have your rotors drilled.

I am the italian customer and it was my idea to modify 05 hubs to 5x100!
It should make the conversion much simpler and easier. Also people that have two or three set of wheels like me, can keep using them.
I'll write a review as I install the new converted hubs.
Thank you Javid!!

Yes, chears for practically forcing me to investigate this option.

I just took possession of the first set of '05 STi knuckles machined for 04 STi and WRX strut fitment. These will be available with '05 5x100 or 5x114.3 drilled hubs.

No, the knuckles that I just picked up will fit your coilovers, or any other old STi or WRX coilover or strut.

So you could use those with either 5x100 or 5x114.3 hubs.
