My experience with this has been that it causes surge especially in 5th and 6th gear when letting off under partial boost on the highway. I don't know if this is because I crushed it too much or what.
Best advice I can give on this issue is "if it aint broke, don't fix it".
I have since replaced the crushed stock BPV with an uncrushed stock BPV and it holds up to 22psi just fine and gets no surge at all under any conditions.
Almsot every aftermarket BOV/BPV seems to have some sort of downside to it, so unless you know your stock one is definitely leaking, I wouldn't bother replacing it.

The reason that this seems crazy is that most people aren't doing this scientifically. Yes, you can do this the correct way instead of doing it the redneck way. What I didn't show in my pictures above is that I was using a MityVac and checking the specs on the BPV as I crushed it. That is what you really need to do. Pull a vacuum on the stock BPV and watch the piston/seal. You want to crush it such that the BPV can still open under vacuum. The whole 'hit it with a hammer' thing is almost ludicrous because you can't verify what you are doing.

This CAN be done correctly.

Yes, you crushed it too much. Check out the post I made directly before this one. There is a way to crush the stock BPV such that you preserve the part throttle functionality (no surge!).

im new around here so hello all. i come from a DSM background and lots of guys do this with the metal 1G valves with zero problems, and many run these for years at a time with no problems, so dont listen to the people who THINK they know what they are talking about. if you did this with a socket in a vise and used a PRECISION instrument like a micrometer. CrystalImprezav said thats how you do it, and without being smart about it, you arent going to get very smart results? you cant put **** in and get gold out

PS, i didnt realize this is such an old thread, oh well. people drag up stuff from 2003

So what is the benefit of this on a stock car? Another question, does the 03 wrx uses the same BPV as the STi?

I am still trying to understand the point. I installed a manual boost controller and 22 psi is common. I have not had any trouble from the stock STi valve. Is this modification designed to take the place of the MBC?
