Default **** DIY Hella Supertone on 04-06 And DIY 04-06 Grill removal***

06'ER I will get pics when i redo my horn today and take pics of my grill removel step by step. Here are jsut the 04-05 i did
First Remove your Horn.

The grill is held on by 6 plastic clips. 4 of these clips are easily accessible on the top of the grill. One of them is shown here:

To pop these clips, simply push into the rectangular hole and press down on the T-shaped plastic tab. It can be a little tricky to get all four of them popped at the same time (after you pop one and go to the next one, the first one will reseat itself), so you might want to start tipping the grill forward as you pop them. Don't yank on it too hard, however, as there are still two more clips to get to.

The final two clips are located near the bottom of the grill, on each end. I couldn't get a good picture of them with the grill still in place, so here are a couple showing where they are after the grill is removed:

These clips are a little tricky to reach, but aren't too difficult to pop. You need to press down on them from the top, similar to the first clips. The tricky part is getting to them. I used a pen or a pencil, but anything that is reasonably thin and more than about 6 inches long should do the trick. You can reach the pen down from the top into the little box area, then push down hard. Once all six clips are free, the grill should come off easily.

Special thanks to Car vs. Driver for hella pics and info. In This install i will show you how to install th3 super tone on your wrx.

Supplies Needed:
1. Electrical Tape or Shrink Tube- (not needed)
2. Wire strippers
3. 14G Wire- Need about (4 foot)
4. 14G Male Connectors- (Box @ Lowes)
5. 14G Female Connector-(Box @ Lowes)
6. 20 AMP In-Line Fuse Terminal- (Auto parts store. NAPA, Autozone)
7. 20 AMP Fuse-(Auto parts store. NAPA, Autozone)
8. Zip Ties-(not required)
9. Sime Wire Loom (if you want)
10. Small nuts, bolts & washers
11. 14G In-Line Wire Connectors

Tools Needed:
1. Screwdrivers
2. Wrenches (for small nuts and bolts)
3. 10mm Wrench
4. Wire Strippers
5. Pliers

What to do:

1. Remove the front grill. And figure out how you're going to mount the horns. I used two existing holes in the radiator support that centered both horns between the side of the grill and the Subaru emblem (see pictures).

2. Disconnect one of the factory horns (or both if you desire). Don't cut the connectors, you will need to use one of them later.

3. Look at the relay that came with the horns. The terminals are numbered, this is what those numbers mean:
87 - (+) Lead for the supertones.
86 - Where the stock horn wire conects.
85 - Relay ground wire.
30 - (+) Power wire, connects to the battery with a fuse.

4. Figure out where you want the relay, because that's going to decide on how you run the wires. Once you have that figured out ...

5. Use your 14G wire to make a harness for the #87 to go to the horns. I ran one 14G wire to one horn, then spliced the second horn with a vampire clip. At all three ends, I used 14G female connectors.

6. Take some 14G wire and crimp a 14G male connector on it. Plug this into one of your disconnected factory horn wires. Then put a female connector on the other end and plug it into terminal #86 on the relay.

7. Find a suitable ground and wire up #85 on the relay. I used a stock ground location next to the batery (see pictures).

8. Now, you need to ground the horns. I ran the ground to the passenger side ground location (see pics). I also made the exact same kind of wiring harness for the ground wire as I did with the (+) lead from the relay.

9. Last is making the connection to the battery. I used a ring terminal and conencted it right to the battery and ran the wire through the protective cover for a clean look. This is where you need to use a 20A fuse terminal.

10. Install your fuse into the fuse terminal and test your horns.

Some things to note:
1. On the horns, the copper connection is (+) to the relay. The silver connecion is (-) to the ground.
2. These mofo's are LOUD So be careful

For those of you who would like to adjust the horn. i will have to ad that later.

Tools and connectors needed:

'Wiring Harness' - I made two of these, one for (+) and one for (-) to the horns:

Battery connection with fuse:

Relay ground location: or you can use your old horn ground

Or friend location

Relay all wired up:

Ground for horns:

The final product:

Trust me its very easer then the 04-05 Grill take out. In the O6 there are 4 clisps together on the top of the grill two on each side of the side grill. not the middle one. you take thosue off and pull and it coesm right off. i learn the hard way and scratch my paint but yuo wont be able to see it when the grill is back on.

More update soon when i get back from work/

check mine out, I like where I put mine on my 06.

Looks great with the plastic divider out of the way. This was done with no drilling, all pre-existing holes, very easy to do on an 06.

Here is a good example of STI.kid and Daves car
Stikid had to cut a small piece of plastic on the back nothing major. but you can see it well in both cars they use the rad bolt.

Daves. if you zoom in you can see he remove the plasic piece. which stikid cut.

Both ways are good i like how the rubber on the rad holds the horn ticht and not move. i use the hole that is on the top and also had to push the hood pop clip off so i can use the existing hole. In those pictures i posted above you can see the horn way better and it stands out more. i will post mine which yuo hardly see sicne i use the holes that are there which means no cuttin on anything,.

I found it easier to use the holes on the front piece because they were so close together, it made it easier for both to be set identical. I'm a symetrical kind of guy,

I removed the center and the driver side because thats where I put my wiring, behind the STi symbol so water and stuff won't get to it as easy. Not a hard thing to do if you have already done the DIY headlight painting mod, since you have to remove everything for that. Haven't had a chance to scare any kids on the side of the road yet, still on the look out.

Thanks for the info guys, I definitely had this thread printed out when I did mine this weekend. I am looking around for a bag of new plastic clips though, I cracked one and lost another. The side pieces are really tough to get out. Remember that all 3 grille pieces have *4* clips each.

Instead of tapping the wires together, I combined them into one female connector:

I put the relay right on the side of the fuse box:

Installed, up close (pay no attention to the rock chip on the bottom):

And yea, they are loud! Sounds more european I guess, not deep but just kinda like HEY, I'm driving here buddy. Enough to make your ears ring

Someone had a video, but it doesn't do it justice. Even inside the car, it's not too loud. Stand in front of them and your ears are definitely ringing.

The main thing is that they go from the stock 110dB to 118dB, which is considerably louder.
