Default help...about shifter bushings

I am going to upgrade all of my shifter bushings (rear and front), the instructions say to remove the whole shifter and the mid pipe. Has anyone done this without removing the whole shifter and mid pipe? I am trying to make things a little bit easier on me. Also, I am not replacing the shifter as of right now and I do have a lift available to me as well.

thanks for any help

depends how big your hands are. or how creative you can be with wobley extentions. i usually do it without taking the Midpipe off. you might need to take the shifter assembly out. i usually do a shifter at the same time so i dont know if it can be done without

If you're going to replace ALL the bushings then you need to remove the entire assembly.

Here's a link that will show you how:

I'm doing mine on saturday. Replacing ALL of the bushings but leaving the stock shifter in. I'm doing it at my brother's shop so I'll be doing it on a lift. I'm going to try to do it without taking the midpipe off because I have access to over $25,000 worth of shop tools. I'm going to see how creative we can get with swivel joints. I'll post up the results when I'm done

I installed the TIC Holy Shift kit last Sun. You will want the shifter out of the car IMHO. helps you get the torque right on the universal kinkage bushings. took my mid off for the extr room. no big deal - 5 bolts/nuts. you will appreciate the room threading the back stay bushing and knocking out/putting in the rollpin. i have large hands though.

I took the linkage out with both the midpipe and driveshaft in place.

If you drop the tranny a few inches (supporting it on the jack per TiC's directions) the DS doesn't get in the way as much.

You have to remove the front of the linkage completely to get the TiC shifter bushings in...at that point, the linkage is "completely out" for all intensive purposes, since the rear is just held in place by the stay bushing and the rubber boot in the center console.

Ok, so I just got done installing my shifter bushings. I did not have to drop the mid pipe at all. It would give you more room if you drop it, but I had plenty of room to get at the shifter. I did the front and rear stay bushings, pivot bushing, and shift linkage bushings. It was not hard to do at all......

I do have a word of warning for anyone who might try to do this. I snapped both of the studs that hold the tranny spine to the trans crossmember. They are only 3/16" studs and mine were pretty rusted. I came to find out that there is a TSB about this exact thing saying that you shuld only use hand tools to remove the nuts from those studs because they have a tendancy to break. So don't do what I did and use air tools on those nuts because it took me 2 hours to drill them out and re-tap new holes and get new studs on!!!!

I actually have a one piece DP and mid pipe so I removed the resonator section which was pretty helpful and it only took like 5 minutes to drop it out. I say remove anything in your way on this install because everything is easier to put back together. The hardest part IMO was the roll pin the the shift linkage. had a helluva time getting the right angle to get it started.

i just removed the cat (bottom section) part of the downpipe and dropped the whole assembly out, but that was because i was replacing the shifter linkage bushings.

I didn't have to take out the roll pin at all. I took out the bolt on the shift linkage and dropped the trans about an inch. Then I just pushed the trans to the passenger side and pulled the bolt out. I tried taking that roll pin out for about 30 sec and said screw it. It only took me about a minute to get the bolt out and was a lot easier than trying to tap out that damn pin.

I should have known better, but I often take the hard road just because...

what shifter and bushing did you get?

i have done it without removing nothing of the sort, however i did one of my friends shifter and notice that removing the front crossmember and having the right flexi wrench and a very cold exhaust, that works well.

PS don't forget to pack lot of white grease everywhere to make thing easy and take away some of vibrations noise.

My friend did this too (gave up on the pin) and had a very hard time getting the bolt back in because the tranny didn't give him enough room/clearance to get it back in.

Took me a while, but I went with the roll pin...
