Exclamation Removal of Stock Muffler with PICS

I decided to do a write up on how to remove the stock exhaust for those who wanted a step by step example. I searched and searched and could not find one on IWSTI.com so… here it is.

Tools needed:
1- Ratchet
2- 12mm long socket
3- 14mm socket
4- 14mm closed end wrench
5- Eye protection

This is how everything looks Stock from the right.

From the Left.

1- I started by removing the underbody spoiler because it looked like it would get in the way.

This is removed with the ratchet and the 12mm long socket. (Make sure to wear your eye protection because many small particles fall down. Also there was water in my underbody spoiler because it rained the night before. I would not want that water on my face.) There are five (5) bolts to be removed and it comes right off.

2- Next, I removed one of the three hangars. This is the only hangar that has a bolt.

This right here is not a nut but I put a ratchet on there to stabilize it. This is the 17mm socket.

The other side is where the bolt is and it is a 14mm bolt. Simply remove the bolt and the hangar will detach.

3- Remove the exhaust from the cat back portion. The ratchet with a 14mm socket and the 14mm closed end wrench are needed here. Remove the two bolts.

Here I have removed one bolt and left the other in.

This picture is to show the location of the two bolts in regards to the tire.

This picture is to show the location of the two bolts in regards to parts underneath the car.

4- Remove the two remaining hangars and you are done.

5- Install your new muffler as per its instructions.

Here is a pic of how it looks removed.

Here is how it looks with the spoiler reattached.

This is a picture from the rear of the car.

Disclaimer:
This is a how to write up on a 2006 STI only (may be different for any other year). I do not promote the removal of the muffler and leaving it like that, nor will I be responsible for any damage to your vehicle. Removal of the muffler will make the car reach higher Db therefore possibly resulting in a summons. I am not responsible for that. If you chose to remove the muffler yourself, deal with the consequences yourself.

I would issue you the honorary "HowTo Contributor" account upgrade, but you're already silver and that's even better.

Zach STI put of this video clip of what I did to my STI. Believe me... it sounds even better going through a tunnel while shifting.

No need to remove the plastic cover in the rear or the hangers.
I just changed mine to full TBE and din't have to do any of that

Just unbolt the exhaust and use long screwdriver to slide muffler off hangers

Just as a tip, sometimes those hangers can be a PIA to remove. If you push the hangers on a bit and then put a little grease around the hanger (I used bearing grease), they will pop right out without even needed to use a screw driver. Same goes for re-mounting an exhaust.

Default Install question

So I just bought a used TurboXS tbe and I want to install it this weekend...couple questions.

Do you need one of the gasket things in between each section of the pipes or just one (cause he only gave me one gasket) and should I get just get a new one or will the used on be fine? (exhaust had 15k on it)

Some people mention getting new hangers...should I? Is it necessary?

I basically have just the pipe pieces (dp, mid, cat, and exhaust) and one gasket...can I use all parts off of the stock system for install (ie: bolts and whatever else I would need)?

I plan on getting a new cobb heat shield cause the old one does not fit afterwards without modification I was told...anything I need?

Thanks for all your help...I am not a mechanic obviously so any help is GREATLY appreciated.
