Oil catch can install (cheap & nice)

I thought I'd try to do my part and show pics of an oil catch can install I did tonight. I bought two of these catch cans on EBAY for $29.00 each. I liked them because besides being shiney, they could be dissasembled with allan screws which would allow me to insert a filter inside. They seem very well made as compared to the major brand names that sell for $129 and such.

Billett extrusions, tapped threads, matte finish etc.

Here is the filter I bought. For a Lawnboy. Got it at Lowes for $5. SHould be able to do two cans with it if you cut it better than I did.

It turns out that the yellow teflon tape sold at hardware stores supposedly isn't for natural gas, but was really developed for gasoline. I had some around and did the threads on the top fittings and the drain on the bottom. The sight glass fittings were already done. I JB Wellded a rubber radiator overflow hose into the fitting I was going to use for the inlet. This will take the oilly inlet air to the bottom of the can, and any oily air will have to go upwards, AND through the foam filter to get back into the engine. The silicone you see inside the can was put on by the manufaturer.

I moved a small horn-like item on the passanger fender well (for an alarm?) and tied it up with zip ties. There are a couple of pair of threaded screw holes already in the strut tower. I widened the holes in the bracket that comes with the can and used some metric bolts and washers to attach it.

Simply screw the can on and it's time to plumb the hoses.

I used two Tees to connect the 3 sources of oilly air together. One from the drivers side cylinder head, one from the passanger side cylinder head, and the one from the crankcase. I bought the 1/2" heater/vacuum hose at the autoparts store.

Looks pretty neat I think. Hopefully it works well. I may later make a bracket so I can use both of the cans. I'll plumb the crackcase breathers into one, and the cylinder head breathers into the other. I'll make that decision based on how fast this one can fills up.

One more question. Did you buy the 9mm or the 15mm fitting size?

The seller (purchase4lessnow) never asked that. Not sure if they really have 2 sizes.

The barrel part of mine measures 14.5mm, and 1/2" ID fuel/vacuum hose from the autoparts store fit right over it with moderate pushing. It fit even easier over the 1/2" hose barbs in the stock system or the extra one I got with the Perrin turbo inlet hose. Nothing required clamps, although I did use up a few of the ones I had about.

I didn't install the second one. I thought I was going to use 2,...one for the valve covers and one for the crankcase breather,...but I only had room to easilly mount one, and being as they both just go back into the turbo inlet hose, I figured there was no point unless there was lots of blow-by.

I have yet to detect and evidence of oil on the sight glass, so I wont be ionstalling to second one.

That was a great write up!!! The pictures are great too... i just bought a catch can off a friend and we were looking at where the lines were and got real confused. Again nice write up, thanks
