My pump install had close nipples but not overlapping or touching like yours. Was the pump fully seated in the black rubber grommet on the bottom of the pump? When you matched the pumps was the Walbro nipple and pump housing longer than stock? What pump model number were you supplied>

Great pictures and good write-up!

I ended up tossing the STi fuel filter. The STi filter (part # 42072 FE020) was $88 at the dealer so I just installed a $15 WRX fuel filter in the engine bay.

Here's a pic of mine. I just took the filter out completely and used some FI hose. Works great and no cutting.

You can remove just the filter part but I just didn't see the need for that filter bulb if there's no filter inside.

I can confirm that the install kit is not necessary, and in some cases may be detrimental. The fuel sock provided with the kits may cause your car to run crappy when your gas tank gets low. All of the parts on the stock filter work with the new one. For those of you looking to do this mod don’t get the install kit.

Other than the kit, this write up is dead on. Just be prepared to get some gas spray when you disconnect the fuel pressure line. You can try and start the car 100 times after it runs out of gas, there is just going to be fuel in the line. A couple of rags should do you just fine!

Good luck.

Sorry, I havent been on here in a while. I got everything from P & L motorsports:

http://www.pandlmotorsports.com/

They are my local shop and Jorge tuned my car. I bought all the parts from them including the turbo for my 20G upgrade, but I installed everything myself.

Yes my pump did fully seat in the new black rubber grommet I got from P & L. Sorry, but I dont know what the model number was for the pump. I can see some numbers in a couple of pictures I posted, but other than that I would have to remove it.

So far I have put thousands of miles on the fuel pump and turbo and it runs very strong and dyno'd at what my tuner and I expected. Based on the power the car puts down, I dont believe there are any flow issues with leaving the large piece in or overlapping the nipples like I did. However I dont think there would be any issues either with the way rodent hooked his pump up.

Pkskull77, you are right about the gas spray. I restarted the car many times and it still happened. You also are probably right about not needing the install kit. The way I see it, as long as the pump is pushing the right amount of fuel through the lines and into the rails, it doesnt matter too much which filter you use or the way it is hooked up.

glad i found this, it finally made me get off my ass and install mine had it sitting in the garage for like 6 months... i had the same issue with it touching the filter nipple. just did what you did. so far so good. hardest part was the line in the middle was stuck like a ***** when i was trying to get the top undone .. this thing sounds alot toughter than the whiny stock one,my car starts alot faster now to. weird, but hey i'll take it . just gotta pop in some new plugs ,then time for a re-tune !(did a dp to) ... i like the filter re-location to the wrx spot idea,it's alot easier there.... oh yeah, i re-used the stock sock deal, everything fit perfect

I just did mine following the guide in here.Excellent guide, thank you.It went kind of smooth taking me 2 1/2 hours.Fitments is fair almost poor.I also had to bend the end of the metal bracket that attaches to the bottom of the pump so i can get the pump in.New electric cable is about 1/4 inch shorter then it should be,Wires are stretch almost to the max.But for $80 bucks i think the pump is OK.Not sure why subaru came with such a small opening for removing the fuel pump.It barely clears the stock filter box when removed. Also i did it with the fuel gage light on so not much fuel was in the tank.I was able to start the car so everything seems to work just fine. This is just my experience with the install today

Thanks

I think the 06's aren't under the seat. I recall my tuner saying something about it being in the trunk with no need to take the seat out . . . I think!

Yep, pull the carpet in trunk up near back seat passenger side. You'll see the cover.

I wonder why the changed it for the 06's? I thought mine was under the rear seat, glad I didnt remove it looking for it. I just pulled up the trunk carpet and Im pretty sure its the fuel pump cover.
