you must go to the state referee and deal with it through them. I see that you are located in socal and this is what they do now. Rarely will you get a fix it ticket that is correctable. You must see the state ref. This is from my exspierence

wow... that sucks.
And at the state ref, they check to make sure that EVERYTHING is stock, not just the exhaust, right?

when i went into the CA state ref, they just check to make sure everything is legal, e.g., carb approved intake. didn't have to be stock.

When I got my exhaust tested by the state ref they only checked my exhaust. I have intake and blow off valve without the CARB # sticker or whatever its called and they didnt say anything. Maybe I just got lucky though. The place I went was in Huntington beach in Southern Cali at a college, dont remember the name.

since the state refs are no longer open... what options do we have now when getting a "loud exhaust" ticket?

If you're running the Magnaflow CBE with oem downpipe and other stock items, you can save some time/money on testing and use this.

Note the distance is 20 inches and directly behind the tailpipe so the dBA readings will be higher than if using the above methodology (iow: if the numbers show are lower than the standard to pass, then you're more than cool).

Just FYI to anyone that gets cited for 27151/27150 cvc:

Alot of officers cite for this section but dont really understand it. Its a very complicated issue now that SEMA was able to give leway to aftermarket exhausts. Go around to police departments and ask for an officer who is savy on equipment violations, (most likely the CHP because they get all excited about traffic stuff).

Officers are allowed to sign off on 27151(a) just by hearing the exhaust and using their judgement (assuming they believe it is under 95 db).

So, if you can find a cool, savy, peace officer, you can get it signed off and just pay the 10$ court processing fee.

Officers cannot sign off on 27150 27156 to 27159 sections, you have to get signed off by a certified smog ref at the DMV.

If your cite is marked "not correctable" that just means an officer cannot sign you off on it, although 27150(a) officers are able to sign off on it. If "not correctable" is marked you need to go into the court and show proof your exhaust is in compliance.

I say go to a police station an try to get it signed off by a cop then bring it in to the court.
