PB Blaster and a flare wrench shouldn't round the nuts.

I hold the bracket still with channel locks - and give it a quick tug rather then steady force - it pops loose and I haven't had one round yet.

1) you guys must have loosened and then re-tightented the brake lines before filming, because I rounded all 4 nuts with my flare wrench. I ended up using a vice grip and that seemed to work better. My nuts are now cylinders.

2) the rear banjo bolt was puzzling to me at first, but then I got a flashlight out and figured it out. Would have been nice to be included in the vid.

3) you can plug the open line with your finger and then take your time getting the new SS line in place - fluid won't run out until you take your finger off.

10mm is what I used. It's just a craftsman but I don't think the tolerance of the flare wrench is off that much. Maybe I should invest in some FACOM tools

I sprayed PB Blaster on all 4 after the first one gave me difficulty - after sitting on there for about 45 min, the last one was just as difficult as the first. I know it wasn't the PB's fault because that stuff has loosened up stuff I was ready to use a plasma cutter on.

This was an 05 STi with 30k miles on it - I don't know if they just seized up more after time or what but I'll be helping a friend with his 06 STi with ~8k miles this weekend - I'll report back on whether it was easier or harder.

Well, I tried to install Goodridge lines tonight and I started on the RF corner and got all the way to the second step before I ran into problems. Like a few other mentioned, I rounded off the 10mm nut, not sure how, I have Craftsman professional flare end wrenches, and I used PB blaster, and nothing, not even a budge. Nothing even with vise grips. Now I'm stuck...any other suggestions?

Almost completely rounded off After doing a fuel pump last weekend and new spark plugs just the other day, this is so far the most frustrating of all the installs I've done and it's just one nut!

edit - pictures were taken after I put everything back together. I did remove the 12mm bolt and the clip and used a cresent wrench just like in the video....

alright so i had the rounding of the brake line nut problem like a lot of other people, sucks! i've done all the wrenchin' on the car myself (front and rear sway bars, steering rack bushings, struts, springs, top hats, changed all my fluids, intake, exhaust.....) and have never been so quickly frustrated

i think i quit messing with it before it got too bad

my question: if the nut becomes completely rounded, what would the fix be?

obviously replacing the the hardline would be 1 way, although i would imagine that would be a royal pain in the ass assuming you can even buy just a single hardline.

could you replace just the flare nut at the end of the line? i.e. cut the line with a pipe cutter just below the rounded nut, slip on a new nut and flare the end of the line again? it would be a little shorter than before but it seems flexible enough to reach the flexible line in the bracket.

question #2: is using a vice grip ok? assuming i don't mangle it.
