Do the brake lines need to be removed? Do the sway bar end links need to be removed? Is a torque wrench a necessity?

Slightly OT, but are all the stock 05 shocks black like this one in the pictures? My 04 shocks are red. Just wondering.

Actually if you have an aftermarket sway bar on the front you may need detach the endlinks to allow the control arm to drop down far enough to re-attach the strut.

'04 struts are not just red, they are "Cherry Blossom Red", the official color of STi hotness. '05 and '06 struts were not graced with the same loveliness.

spring compressors can be rented from Autozone for real cheap, like a couple of bucks with a deposit. Or you can get them from autozone, harbor freight, Sears...etc.

Spring compressors are about $40 at autozone, you can rent them for free too.

If you are not using an air gun make sure you have an allen key and the open socket wrench.

How long does this whole procedure take w/out airtools and a lift. Will I also need a torque wrench for this job?

If you have never done it before, allow yourself a 2-3 hours. A torque wrench is a very good tool to have, the strut top bolts do not take very much to break. I have done it a couple of times without one though, just be careful.
