Anyone do the 'home depot special' yet? If you did, which filter works?

I've got 45000 mi on the original cabin filter so I want to do this today, but can't get parts from the subaru dealer.

EDIT:
Went to home depot and picked up this:

Cut it to size using the old filter as a template. There is enough on the roll for 2 filters.
I can already notice the difference in smell - there is none.

Time will tell if it works well or not, I already know that a paper filter would work better at stopping fine dust. BTW, I think I win the dirty stock filter prize

Thanks for the write up. I was wondering how to do this. But Guys and Gals I've seen worse cabin filters.

Thanks for the writeup! It made my job much easier.

I just changed my filter at 37K. Yuck! Not as much debris as some of the pictures in this thread, but there was a lot of dark gray crud piled up in the pleats. Plus the filter material was gray on the EXIT side meaning that it had pretty much stopped doing much good.

err... Dude, that isn't a filter, it's a humidifier wick (designed to suck up water from the bottom of the dish). That won't filter anything (except maybe really big pieces of leaves)...

Ah yeah man this isnt the kind of filter your thinking of this is to hold water while air passes over it to put humidity into the house. Its not gonna filter anything like the other guy said except big pieces of leaves and stuff.
You could just buy a like 16x25x1 at home depot hepa filter or 3m filter and cut it down to size and put some duct tape around the edges to keep it from fraying...
iv had my car for 3-4 years now 04 sti and iv never changed it and i dont think the dealer has either...time to do it this weekend...

The good ones hepa and 3m are like 2-4 bucks each. They are for Furnaces for heat and air but you can leave two of the sides and cut the rest out to the size of the stock filter and cover the two cut edges with duct tape better then your stock filter for 4 bucks

I have a few questions.
Does this fit right (mainly in thickness)?
Where can you get these?
Do you have any pics of it done?
