Exclamation DIY USDM foglight adjustment

I've been getting a ton of questions about this so I decided to create a quick little Do-It-Yourself thread.

Caveats:
  • This is not an official procedure and is not sanctioned by SoA, SoJ, SoC, or SoAnywhereElse.
  • This applies only to '04 and '05 WRX and STi; it might work on '06 too, but I have not seen their foglights nekkid
  • This is not an extremely precise procedure, but it would be easy enough to add precision if desired
Tools:
  • a piece of level-enough ground
  • a vertical object; a wall, a cardboard box, a trash can, etc.
  • tool suitable for removing fog light surround
  • #2 phillips head screwdriver
  • ruler / yardstick or string and level
Procedure:
  1. Find a piece of level-enough ground. I define this as any paved surface where I can bring my car to a gentle stop, push in the clutch, release the brake, and the car does not roll.
  2. Place vertical object approximately 6 feet in front of car, located such that the foglight beam will hit it.
  3. Measure the distance from the ground to the center of the foglight. Transfer this measurement to the vertical object. Example: you measure 12 inches from the ground to the center of the foglight with a yardstick. Stand the yardstick up against the vertical object and remember "12 inches, 12 inches, 12 inches..." Alternatively you can use a string and a level to transfer the foglight height over to the vertical surface.
  4. Remove the foglight surround, being careful not to mar the finish of your lovely little beastie. (Removal is so easy to do that I hesitate to post details or pictures lest people steal even more covers than they already do.)
  5. Locate the adjusting screw at the top inside corner of the foglight assembly (see picture).
  6. Turn the car on, put it in neutral, pull the handbrake on, and turn the foglights on.
  7. Remembering the measurement you took in Step 3, turn the screw to adjust the top of the foglight beam to be even with, or just a smidgen below, that measurement. Turn the screw clockwise to raise the beam, and counterclockwise to lower the beam.
  8. Reassemble your beastie.
  9. Put the trash can back where you found it.
  10. Enjoy your newfound light!

Update: I finally drove in some real fog and soup this morning. The fog lights are great, and it's pretty cool to be able to lower the HID's too. I had really good visibility throughout the foggy part of the drive. I think I'm finished with front end lighting for a while, with the possible exception of trying some Hella Yellowstars in the foglights.

what wattage of the Hella Yellowstars would you recommend for the fogs? 55w/85w/110w?

I have the 55w Hellas because I heard you're just asking for trouble with the wiring in the long run going any higher. I'd rather be safe than sorry and run at the same wattage as stock. They work great though....huge difference from the crappy silverstars I had before (that both fried within 2 months). Now I just have to try adjusting and see how much more I can get out of them.

I would stick with the stock wattage because of the size of the foglight housing. Higher wattage = more heat, and more heat = shorter life if the housing cannot dissipate the heat. The "shorter life" part of the equation can be dramatically shorter; I put 85w bulbs in my '00 Legacy GT and they burned out in less than an hour.

Why would i need to adjust them?... I am sure it makes a difference somehow, but does what raising it do or lowering it do. I would imagine that subaru has the right height figured out for driving in fog. (i have a WRX with factory fogs).

STi's are notorious for having headlights aimed too low from the factory, so why should I expect them to get the foglights right? Answer: I don't.

Default need some advice!

sorry to resurrect an old thread...but i just had my fog light covers stolen from the parking lot at my apartment complex and now im trying to decide which way to go about this one...

i could either get fog light covers again or the fog lights...personally i like the clean look of fog light covers but the thought that someone might try jacking them again is not a good one...so i guess this brings me to some questions...

first, how secure would you guys say the fog lights are installed...looking at some pics i would say all it takes is a couple of screws in the front but i might be wrong...

second, is it possible to mount fog light covers over the fog lights when you don't need the fogs for a clean look?

and third, is there a way to install fog light covers and secure them somehow so they cant be easily popped off?

thanks for any feedback, i really appreciate it!

also, does anyone have any good pics that show light output from stock fogs? i think i would consider fogs if i could secure them to my car and swap bulbs for blue ones to match the color of my car or something...dont get much fog where i live so fogs have no real value for me...

again thanks for you input!

I have a set available with PIAA ion yellow bulbs if you decide to get the lights. PM me.
