just in case I let some air in, how do you bleed air from the brakes?

Thanks!

Bit confused. You start bleeding the brakes, but when do you pour in the new fluid? Before you start? That way when you bleed them, you see the color of the new fluid and know when to stop?

This post is a little old but what I like to do is use the turkey baster (recommended a few posts up) and suck out all the old dark fluid first thing and fill up the reservoir with the new fluid. Then just keep bleeding the first caliper (should be front right inside bleeder screw) until there aren't any air bubbles left and the fluid starts to come out clear.

I rebleed my brakes two days ago and was surprised to find zero air bubbles...

My friend and I completly changed out the brake fluid and lines about 9 months ago... but I was definatly thinking that I would have air in them... Turns out when I did it the other day I had zero air bubbles... Not even little ones...

I bought the motive pressure bleeder, worked quite well and the most time consuming part was taking off the wheels and jacking the car up...lol

Ok I think I did this wrong. I Just slapped on the cross slotted brakes all around with HPS+ pads. I also dropped in some stoptech brake lines. Now I bought some RBF600 and decided to completely drain the system. so I unhooked the rear caliper from the line and had my buddy press the pedal until there was no more fluid in. With the rotors pads, and lines back in place it was time to bleed. Filled the resevour up with the new fluid. Had my buddy pump the brakes then started bleeding. I went all around the car in the order prescribed up top. After getting done the peddle went all the way to the floor. So this time we tried closing the cap on the fluid reservour. I bled them again untill no bubbles came out. Same thing. We just said screw it for the night, and on the drive home my brakes wouldn't actually grip untill the pedal was damned near the floor. Where did I go wrong?

Does your buddy pumping the brakes know to keep the pedal push all the way down until you close the bleeder screw? Were you closing all of the bleeder screws all the way when bleeding? If you mess up just one time you have a chance of getting air in the abs system. Once that happens it can be quite a pain to get the all of the air out. Just throwing ideas out there. I remember the first time i ever bled brakes i was not closing it tight enough. (its hard to see air bubbles when your not pumping it thru a tube in my defense )

If you want some insurance, make sure the other end of your bleeder hose is always submerged into your old brake fluid. That way, if you do let up on your stop pedal while a bleeder is open, you're sucking in fluid, not air.

I just spent the weekend doing this trying to get ready for the CObb track day and I thought I had done everything right just to find out I never bled any of the inside nipples (DER!!). The pedal goes all the way to the floor and won't hold pressure. Could this be because I haven't done the inside nipples yet?

+1 for the great writeup and the motive power bleeder. First time flushing the brake fluid and it was so easy. The power bleeder works great. The brake pedal feel is improved.

Question though, the brake fluid reservoir is filled all the way up to the cap now. Is this bad?

I also opted not to fill the Motive container up, but chose to merely pressurize it while empty to facilitate the process of pushing the old fluid out while keeping a full/semi-full brake fluid reservoir.

My routine:

*Words of advice: a.)Be slowwww with the bleeder screws b.)Monitor your psi gauge on the Motive container c.)Monitor your fluid levels at the brake reservoir at all times

1.) Fill brake fluid reservoir to MAX or just a tiny bit above
2.) Install Motive Power Bleeder and pressurize to 12-15 psi
3.) Begin with the Front-Right caliper, open inside bleeder til clear, close it, then the outside one til clear, then close it.
4.) Depressurize Power Motive container by unscrewing its cap VERY slowly(the Motive's cap, NOT the brake reservoir cap!!!
5.) Fill brake fluid reservoir to MAX again
6.) Install Motive Power Bleeder to reservoir and pressurize again to 12-15 psi.
7.) Move to Rear-Left, inside bleeder first til clear, then close it, then outside bleeder til clear, then close it.

*Disclaimer: Depending on how gutsy you are in running the brake reservoir down, you may need to intervene during the bleeding of the rear brakes due to the length of the lines. Simply follow Steps 4-6, then continue what you were doing at that particular bleed screw.

8.) After you finish with the Rear-Left caliper, follow steps 4 & 5, then install the factory yellow brake reservoir cap.
9.) Start the vehicle- DO NOT touch the brake pedal at this time!!!!
10.) Shut off the vehicle after 10 seconds or until you start to feel light-headed.
11.) Follow Step 6.
12.) Move to the Front-Left caliper, inside bleeder first til clear, then close it, then the outside bleeder, then close it.
13.) Follow Steps 4, 5, and 6.
14.) Move to Rear-Right caliper, inside bleeder first til clear, then close it, then the outside bleeder, then close it.
15.) Follow Steps 4 and 5, then install yellow brake reservoir cap.
16.) Start vehicle and examine pedal feel and stroke.
17.) If confident, spray entire brake area with brake cleaner to remove any contaminants.
18.) Put your wheels on(duh) and take it for a drive. Activate ABS by braking like you saw Bill Clinton on the side of the road running a cigar stand.
19.) If you are special like me, you would have done it right the first time.

I got it right using this method. In all, I used 2.5 pints of Motul RBF600. The Motive Power Bleeder is great because it eliminated one huge variable- your buddy pushing the brake pedal. It offered me a consistent way of pushing the old stuff out, at MY leisure. The Motive Power Bleeder is definitely a item.
Clear and concise how to with the Motive Power Bleeder. Just finished bleeding mine for the first time tonight. Reservoir was also up to the top so I used a cheapo turkey baster to suck it down to the max line. Now I just need to run into Bill Clinton tomorrow. Thanks Stee!

Do one caliper at a time out nipple and then in nipple then do all four like that. I just did them last week it took a bit but they feel great. Just like I said do them one at a time and make sure your buddy keeps an eye on the fluid and just keeping pumping and filling to you get them bleeded. I also just used a peice of clear tubing and taped that into a empty water bottle so you can see the fluid and bubles. Hope that helped
