Exclamation clutch delay valve delete - alternative method

we had an opportunity to do this mod during my cutn edg project build and ricky figured out an easier way to plug the master cylinder than the one described in the original post on the subject and i want to share it with you. just follow the directions on the link below until you get to the second half of the project that involves replacing the stock plug bolt on the master cylinder with the oil drain bolt and copper washers.

here is the original thread:
Clutch delay valve repost (with pics)

as you'll see, the second half of the job calls for locating a 16mmx1.5x20mm oil plug bolt and the two copper washers to plug the master cylinder. someone else posting in the thread complained that it was hard to find the right bolt and they were right; it was a total pita. so here's what we did: you just need a tap and die set (which beats going on a scavenger hunt for the bolt from hell).

remove the original the stock bolt/shim pack from the master cylinder and just plug its inside hole with a set screw that is sized just slightly wider than the hole. tap the hole to fit the set screw and then scew in the set screw to close the hole.

that's it. you must complete the entire project or it will not work. in other words, you will be dead in the water unless you do, so don't start until you have everything you need and you can finish. it takes less a half hour to 45 min.

You mean drill that hole and cap it w/ screw so the fluid can't get in the hole "reservoir" hole?

Good information. I added it to the "Threads of Interest".

I got the "Nissan" Oil Pan bolt and reuse the same OEM washer.
Somehow you won't notice the leak immediately but over a course of 3 months then all of sudden my clutch is all the way down.

So I went back and put back to stock and by pass the Master Cyclinder Mod.

What does this "reservoir" do actually?
Seems like it's not as obvious as the slave cylinder in terms of providing the "delay".

Seems like I'm going to have to finish the mod on the master cylinder again bolt again.

Can't you just take out the spring itself and that's it?

i'm going to try to make it. i've got an intense biz situation going on. i hope to see you there.

we tried to do the delay with just the spring removal because we couldn't find an appropriately sized and threaded oil drain plug. it does not work without the second series of steps.

you are either going to have an easier time finding the plug to replace it than i did or you can do our alternate method. trust me, re-using the stock part is a no-brainer if you have a set screw and tap tool. you won't even need to find copper washers. it took all of two minutes.

Ok I have a tap set, but what set screw do you need? When you say set screw, do you mean one of those ones with a pointy tip and an "inset" allen head pattern for the head to drive it in?

I don't see why we can't just order the part from a dealership if we know exactly which one we need... if somebody could get the part number and post it, we'd all be set. Copper washers can be bought at Home Depot right?

Bruce,

would you care to enlighten on the master cylinder mod? Why do you have to plug that hole? I guess I don't understand what that hole does, at the master cylinder (that you plugged with the set screw)

Here's the EXEDY steps: http://www.exedyusa.com/multimedia/s...hOrficeWRX.pdf

^they just have you remove the springs/orifice at the slave cylinder???

sorry for the confusion, and thanks for the help!

sorry it took so long to get to this, mod. i've been campaigning for local office...scary thought, eh?

you need to do both steps; the removal process detailed in your link below and the plug or it will not work. you have two choices for the plug; either find a oil drain plug with a thread size/type that fits or the 'tap the set screw method' i detailed here. either will work but you must do both.

as to why, the reason is simple, you need to block the movement of hydraulic fluid by plugging the hole or changing the plug.

clutch delay valve delete

Title says it all.

MY03 Impreza above has delay restrictions on the clutch both master and slave cylinder to prevent abusive driver to damage the tranny.

This delay is annoying for those drivers who like direct feeling of non restricted clutch.

question: Just got an exedy twin disc installed last night, and the mechanic says he didn't find the delay valve in the slave cylinder-- is this possible that some don't have it? I'm first owner, 2007 STI limited.
