I tried to hardwire my Passport tonight...didn't quite work out...

I bought the 4 pin phone cord from Radioshack. First, I figured out which end I should use by matching it up with the cig lighter cord. Then I chopped off the end and taped up the black and yellow wire since I didn't need them. Next I soldered the 2 amp in-line fuse onto the red wire. Then I used the "vampire clips" to splice the red/fuse line to the red/yellow and the green to the black. I plugged it in and started it up...got nothing...

I didn't blow a fuse or anything because I tried the cig lighter plug and that still works, as do the map lights and everything else...

I don't know if I should rip it all out and try again...try to ground it to a screw...or wire the ground to another wire before going into the clip to the black ground...Any suggestions? Should I just go and get the direct wire from Escort? If I do, does that have an in-line fuse??

can you test to see if the cord is getting current & the circuit is complete?

Fullerton: Was that a question you were asking me or everyone...If it was to me, should I just use a multimeter after the inline fuse?

i was asking you. make sure you are getting power to the v1 through the cord. that would be my first step to fixing the problem.

I just finished wiring up my 8500...and it works!

I ripped out everything I had done before and started from scratch...

The radioshack 4-wire telephone wire I had tried first was just too brittle and high of gauge wire to strip correctly in order to splice it into the compass mirror wires.

So I used a 6-wire line that I ripped off a bass level control knob instead. I matched up the right end with the cig lighter of the 8500 and soldered some extensions on to the red and green wires with some 18 gauge wire...Then I crimped them into the compass wires (yellow/red and black) and it fired up!

Now I'll have to add that in-line fuse so that I'll be safe from a spike...

I just performed this install on an '07 STi and used the 'vampire tap', supplied by Valentine, into the red/yellow power cord on the mirror/home link connection (which is wrapped in foam). I had to cut some of the black wire cluster sheathing back to access the wire.

When using the multi-meter I must have crossed 2 lines because I blew a fuse. If this happens to you, the fuse is a YELLOW 20 amp fuse located behind the coin tray down to the left of the steering wheel. It’s fuse #4. Simply remove the coin tray and you'll see the fuse panel. I used the fuse puller supplied in the fuse box under the hood to yank the fuse and replace it.

I ran the ground line to one of the two screws which hold the light fixture up. It was bi*ch getting the ground wire to stay connected to the screw while re-installing the fixture, simultaneously keeping wires tucked away to get a good fit. I must have dropped that little screw 10 times before everything came together and the screw went in the hole. (Of course it falls between the seats every time.) A suggestion here is to place a towel or shirt over the e-brake so if you drop the screw it you won’t have to fish it out from under the seat.

Another tip if you run the ground wire to the light fixture screw: place the ground termination around the screw and squeeze the ends with needle nose pliers to crimp it in place. This will keep the screw in the light fixture while you install it and the ground wire in place while you re-mount everything.

Have fun…

I find that pretty funny that people are calling it a coin tray now, I think it's intended to be a spare fuse tray but everyone puts coins in there. I forgot to take them out at the autocross this weekend and couldn't figure out where the sound was coming from - believe it or not, it actually kept all the coins in after 4 runs!

A fuse tray?! How many fuses are you expecting to blow? Sounds like something a Ford might have.

i'll use this thread to post the way i wired up my V1, hoppe that's ok. i didn't read the hole thread, just looked at the pictures, if i'm stealing someone else's idea, sorry. i had it the same way on my previous car(Lexus IS300)
here what i have on my 07:
the V1 is all the way in the back, used the middle bracket bolt for the child safe seat. the braket is from an old brake pad shim(i think form a Camry, just found one laying around). it's in U shape and tall enough to go above the back seat

i attached the V1 to the bracket with a Velcro

another look at the bracket

to make sure that no one knows i have V1 i put a hat over it(yes it works just fine, just the laser detection is not as good, but who needs that anyway, if some one is shutting u with laser it's too late already anyway)

a long telephone cable(from Wal Mart) goes form the V1 to the front of the car, under tha back seats, under the plastick panels under the LR and LF doors to the dash.

here is the car when it's parked

here is when i'm driving

the display is in where the ashtray should be. this is an 07, so i didn't have an ashtray, i had AUX in, i had to relocated behind and ran cable from it to the cup holder, where my iPod stays when i drive.

closer view

as u see, i use the cigarete lighter to power the V1. yellow/red goes to red(+) on the V1, and black goes to black(-) on the V1

and because the V1 is in the back, when u have the music on and the windows open u don't hear it, i put a remoute speaker in the front, i put it in the little glove box above the fuses

and here is the AUX cable that goes to the cup holed where the iPot stays

That looks really great! It's the first time I've seen one mounted like that in a Subaru.
