I was wondering if the V1 could be mounted IN the map lights .. IMO, that would be quite stealthy.

It seemed to work the same in the different locations.

I got the same signal strength when it was below the dots. Front and back.

That doesn't mean I'm right, but it does mean that it doesn't make a big enough difference to remount it.

I've had this detector for almost 2 years now.... and knock on wood... I haven't received a moving violation yet.

Default Hardwiring a V1

Yes, I know several people have done this already, but I figured I'd add my 2 cents.

I wanted a switchable source of power, so instead of tapping the blue wire from the map lights, I tapped a wire off my Homelink/Compass mirror.

I tapped the black wire with yellow stripe, its the outside wire on the harness. I used a "vampire" clip rather than making a Y connection. I've had very good luck with these vampire clips as long as they're inside the car and not exposed to the elements. I attached my ground to one of the screws that holds the mirror assembly to the car and tucked the V1 hardwire box and all extra wires up off to the right of the lamps.

I ran the V1 phone cord through the headliner and followed the Homelink mirror wire, covering it up with the same cover, then mounted the V1 directly underneath the rear view mirror, so only the bottom of the V1 is visible.

That way it's not in my way, I can still see it and reach it and it's not obscured by those black dots on the windshield.

It looks very clean and I don't have to worry about turning the V1 on and off.

Yes, I really am that lazy...

Excellent write up gmb, thanks. I just completed this mod and wanted to update those with late year 2005 (which I guess mine is). Once you get the plug down, the wires have changed color. The black wire in the middle is still ground, but the +12V wire is now colored yellow with a red stripe. Other than that, no changes to the write up.

I concur, the visor mount bracket is some really tuff stuff. Had to use my drill press and cutting oil to get it started. Also used a smaller bit for the first pass.

Thumbs up Electrical nOOb succeeds!!! Thanks

Just wanted to thank everyone here for the info and pictures. I never would have attempted this if it weren't for this forum. I had my V1 for one day and thought this lighter plug stuff was crap, plus I need it for my 18 other lighter plug accesories. I am still using the suction cups though, and have the unit mounted under the mirror. I used different connectors. I'm not sure what they are called, but they crimp onto the wire and you can just plug in. The whole thing took less than 45min.

My hot wire was yellow c red too, and it was thicker than the other two. So what is that brown wire for? It seemed to be a ground also. I connected to the black for ground.

My $0.02, I thought drilling through the visor clip and attaching it to the ceiling of the car put the unit a little too high (front window of V1 behind the dots, and back window not low enough for a good line-of-sight). Also, there was no way to easily adjust it. Then I used the suction cups and placed it just above the mirror, but low enough to where the black dots do not block the unit. This was ALMOST the best solution because most people don't notice it until I show them, or it makes a noise. Also, the angle is adjustable using the suction cup mounting device. Only ONE problem!!! The suction cups do not stick well on those black dots, and I did not want to scrape them off. Solution? It actually sounds quite ghetto-fabulous, but it works! I took a piece of clear packing or mailing tape and stuck it over the dots on the exact spot where the suction cups go. You can barely tell it's there, and the suction cups have been securely stuck in place for close to a year now through single digit lows last winter to triple digit highs a few months ago.

I am using the big suction cups on the black dots and they have been working fine for me. I think it's the best location AND it was easier than drilling. I have the remote display so I don't have to mute it on the V1 itself, which may be why mine has never slipped or fallen off.

Is it hot where you are? (my other car has a sirius radio mounted by giant suction cup but it falls off in hot parking lots)
Do you mute it a lot?
