Default How To: Adjusting Stop (Brake) Light Switch on GR

The Problem(s):
1 - Brake pedal switch is not sensitive enough
2 - When lightly stepping on the brake pedal, brake lights do not come on
3 - Driving a manual transmission vehicle requires less use of brakes in traffic
4 - Problems 1-3 combined causes tailgaters to get too close to comfort, as the brake lights will not come on unless the pedal is pushed down far enough (and may be too late)

The Solution:
Adjust the damn Stop Light Switch!!!

Difficulty:
1/10

Time Required:
Less than 5-minutes

Tools Required:
-Your hands
-Your feet

Procedure:
1 - Move the drivers seat all the way back for more clearance to work under the dash

2 - Locate the Stop Light Switch
2a - This is a small black box located above the brake pedal, it has a connector plugged into it - DO NOT UNPLUG THIS CONNECTOR

3 - Grab the Stop Light Switch and rotate Counterclockwise about 60
3a - The Stop Light Switch should pop out

4 - Once the switch has popped out, you will notice your brake lights will come on. Notice the "teeth" on the shaft of the switch, these "teeth" are the adjustment teeth and allow for different placement depths of the switch. At this point it should be quite self explanatory of how your stop light switch works, and you will see how you need to re-insert this to adjust the activation point

5 - Re-insert the switch, and push the switch slowly until the brake lights turn off
5a - You can move the switch in and out until a desired point is reached
5b - Once you have reached that point, turn the switch Clockwise to lock it back in place, you're all done!
5c - If you do not push the switch in far enough, your brake lights will just stay on the whole time, which is the exact opposite of what you're trying to do here!

6 - Now you can tap your brake lights without having to actually slam the pedal down!

Questions/Comments/Concerns???

Tips/FAQ
Q: Help! I can't see my brake lights when I'm underneath the dash trying to adjust the switch
A: You have a few solutions, you can do the following
1 - Park car in dimly lit area so you can see the reflection of your brake lights
2 - Have an assistant yell out when he sees the brake lights come on and off
3 - Grab a mirror so you can see

Q: What if I want to have my brake lights come on even later than they already do?
A: Push the switch further in before locking it into place

Q: Are you really Conan O'Brien?
A: No, just a fan!

Must be a 2011 thing. My brake lights come on if I even breath on the pedal.

I had my car at the dealer two days ago for just this issue and they didn't fix it. I'll try this over the weekend.

Thanks for the write up!

Any chance someone could take some pictures of the sensor and other parts referenced? I'm sure it'll make sense when I get in there, it'd just make me feel better to know more what I'll be doing.

I've been noticing this the past couple weeks. If it wasn't for the wing, I'd never have known. I always down shift to slow down and hardly use the brakes. I figured sooner or later a tailgater would smack me.

Thanks for the write up!

Just done this, and it literally took 5 minutes, even taking pictures:

Before:

Pulled out:

After Adjustment:

As mentioned, very easy to do. You can notice in the first picture that the switch is quite close to the mounting bracket. In the last picture, you can tell that I moved it further away from the bracket. Probably by 4 or 5 clicks.

When pushing it back in, I went about 3 clicks further more after the brake lights went out. I didn't want the brake lights coming on prematurely. There is a slight amount of slack in the brake pedal, and anything past that slack, the lights come on.

I just did this a few days ago and was going to post a how to but you beat me to it...... After about 800 miles I couldent stand the lights not comming on at the right brake pressure anymore. I also would have never noticed this without the wing.

Good writeup and nice pics!!

Funny, I have a 2011 Hatch, and noticed it for the first time at a stoplight by seeing the slight glow of red off my rear wiper!

Thanks for taking pictures! What year is your GR? Interesting thing to note, my switch is black and yours is gray!
