I have only tried it on one strut so far, later today i will try it on another strut and see if i get the same problem.
I had the same problem. After 3 hours I used an impact gun, I'd only recommend it as an absolute last resort though.

Sounds like the slotted part of the rod is out of the notch. Try compressing the strut while reversing the nut. It should slide back into the notch and allow you to remove the nut.

If not, the threads may be stripped.

I gave up in the end.

I tried everything i could to remove the nut but no good.

I'll just have to put upp with the noise a little longer.

sounds like the nut came loose and the threads are stripped.

Bump:

I did this on Saturday on my 05. My strut clunk is gone now.

It would have been a 1-1/2 hour job if it weren't for the rear drivers side rod nut!

Here's a tip: if the rod nut spins, the only way to get it off that does not involve cutting is to find a really strong impact wrench and give it the 'on-off-on-off technique' - meaning you hit the nut with the impact, let it stop spinning, and then hit it again. That way the hammers inside the wrench are actually 'smacking' the nut off. Compressing the strut itself is a good idea too to get some friction of the bumpstop, and the lower strut mount.

Once you get it off, and you're done with the job you're obviously going to want to get the nut back on.. I was able to get it back on by lubing up the threads with some Moly, and zipping it on as quick as I could with the impact wrench.

The passengers side was no problem at all... that darn drivers side took 2-3 hours.

All in all I'm glad I did it, because my grease reservoirs were pretty dry.

If you DON'T have air tools, and the lower rod nut spins put the struts back on the car, and find someone who has air tools. If you're stuck with the nut halfway loosened your suspension will be FUBAR'D, and will rattle like crazy.

My struts have about 12k+ miles on them repacked. I pulled them apart a couple weeks ago for grins and giggles. Still full of grease. I'll take pics some time this week. I am on coilovers now so a long term test isn't really possible.
