A little time and patience. There's really not much to it besides the bazillion amount of bolts on the stock turbo heat shield. Just use a liberal amount of penetrating oil and be careful with the o2 sensor

Do you have to unbolt the turbo?

no you dont have to unbolt the turbo, but taking off the intercooler makes it an easier job. Spray some PB Blaster on the downpipe bolts and let it sit, you should be all good after that. good luck

The up-pipe is the biggest PITA job, involves jacking up the motor and everything.

No you dont have to jack the motor up. Yes it can make the install/life much easier, but you do not have to.

You do not have to jack up the motor. I have heard that you do but i have done dozens of upipes and I have never jacked up the motor. I have even done a uppipe from start to finish in about 45 minutes the ones that give me a little bit of trouble usually take me about an hour and a half to do.

You don't need to worry about the up pipe. In the STI it doesn't have a restricting cat.

Just carefully take off the topmount intercooler and be sure to remember how you took it off, cause it can be a PITA putting it back on if you don't do it the same way connecting the hoses and such.

Once the intercooler is off you have alot of room above and below the downpipe to reach all of the bolts. The most PITA bolt is the one that is on the bottom side of the DP/wastegate area and it's a bit hard to get to with a bigger socket.

Definitely make sure you use some WD40 or lubricant to loosen the bolts if they look rusted.

Lastly, you might have some trouble getting the new DP back on the same way you took it off, the fitting the bolts can be a little tricky in that tight space. Make sure when you're attaching the DP back to the turbo not to pinch the gasket in any areas, otherwise it will cause a leak.

Then just stick your top mount back on, connect the hoses etc and you're done.

Also if you're installing a heat shield, make sure you don't forget to do that BEFORE you put your top mount back on.

Good luck.

^^I can agree the first time you do a DP install you might want to take off the TMIC. But the second time around I didnt bother. Just put some never seize on the bolts before you put the new DP on. Then next time you have to take it off, it will be a cake walk and wont have to take off the TMIC to get the bolts off.

O thats nice to know. Most of the reason I havent done the up pipe yet is because I didnt feel like going through the hell-ish install.
