Default Bring your HID wisdom.

Ive done a bit of research and now only more confused then when i started.
I want to get a HID kit for my car(2004 STi). Now apperently STi's come stock with HID's... but i want the bright white/blue light.

Do i need a full HID with wire harness', ballast and new bulbs...

or

Do i just need replacement bulbs...

If some STi's came with HID's and other didnt, how do i check what my car is equipped with.

How can i find out what kind of bulb i need...

Hey, all you need to do is get a bulb. You currently have 4300K on your car right now. If you want a bright white/blue color you will need the 6000K range no more no less. Your bulbs are D2R i believe.

Cars that come stock with HIDs will have the capability to replace their D2S bulbs (if your car has a projector) or D2R bulbs if your car uses a reflector. Users can vary the color by going to different temperature bulbs with varying K (Kelvin) values. Keep in mind that whiter light will have brighter output and bluer lights will be less brighter (this is different than the color temperature).

If your car did not come with HIDs, then you will need the whole kit (ballast/ignitor, wiring harness & appropriate bulbs for lamp housing).

There are many pros/cons regarding HID conversion kits. I'd say read up online. Beware of cheap kits. Daniel Stern of Daniel Stern lighting is a pretty good resource. He helped me when we upgraded to HIDs on our B5.5 Passat (upgraded to euro OEM HID units).

If your '04 does indeed come with HIDs, then all you'll need is a pair of D2R bulbs of your temperature choice.

I did some more research and your correct. The bulb list above is correct except for the lowbeams. Canadian models dont have HID low beams, its an H1 Halogen around 4000k.

A cheal alternative to HID's in this case will just be a bulb upgrade. For about 45$ you can get H1 6000K bulbs which look quite nice. Tomorrow morning Im going to pick some up, and tomorrow night ill try and get some shots in. Ill post the befores and afters.

Look at post # 4 . D2R is reflective, Which means you dont have a projector in your headlight, D2S means that you have a projector lens and it can shine a beam of light to the road ahead. D2R needs to be reflected off of to shine ahead. Hope this helps.

I just installed them and they fit fine. Only difference was a 3 notches on the ring instead of 2

I put a full HID kit on my wife's Acadia and went with 5000k bulbs. Although they are quite blue and look really nice, I do notice that they produce quite a bit LESS light than a 4300k bulb...

I didn't think that 700k would make that much of a difference but it does...

If I was to do it over again, I would stick with the 4300k bulbs that just about all stock cars with HID's come with.

Cheers,

Jay
