Question How to: Install Cobb Catback Exhaust (07)

Here is a quick write up of how to install your cobb catback exhaust. I don't know if it is different to the other types, but I'm assuming they are at least related. This is a very do-able DIY if you've never even put on so much as LED's on your car.

Estimated work time: 1-2 hours
Difficulty: 4/10

Onto the instructions already!

Tools needed:

14 mm socket wrench
Flat head screw driver
4 Jack stands/Jack

(thats it?? yes)

Reccomended:
Liquid Wrench (to loosen up the bolts)
A creeper (note: I highly highly suggest you get one of these if you plan to work under your car. I didn't have one at the time, and found myself crawling with my back which not only is tiring, but extremely time-consuming)
A friend (definetly doable w/o one)

Jack up your car onto the stands. If you've never done it before, look here

So the way I took off the stock catback was starting from the end, and going towards the cat in the middle of the car. You can start from the cat as well if you wish.

So starting from the tip of the exhaust, you're going to see two rods on the left and right side coming out of the exhaust and going into these rubber 'holes' These are probably the hardest to get out.

Right side (there's actually a bolt that connects it to the car, I took it off becuase I figured I would have more leverage once the exhaust is completley off, but if you can manage to take it off right there, go for it)

For the left side, it isn't bolted on so you'll have to use the flat head screwdriver to pry it off.

So there are two more of these obnoxious rods with the rubber holes on the exhaust. Here's a picture of the stock catback already taken off:

You'll noticed two bolts in between these two rods that can actually seperate the exhaust into two pieces. Do NOT try to take them off. I'm not sure how they tightened them, but they are ridiculously tight and clearly are not meant to be taken off for whatever reason.

Now to the ONLY 2 bolts you need to take off. Move all the way to the cat, and you'll notice the exhaust is connected by these 2 "spring bolts". Don't lose these, you'll be using them on the new Cobb.

After these two bolt, the exhaust SHOULD drop down. Be careful as it's pretty heavy.

As for installing the new cat back, it's pretty straight foward. The only difference is that it is in two parts. You can choose to connect them in the beginning or put it one at a time. Just be sure to use the O-ring/gasket when you do connect them. Be sure to put in all the rubber holes so your exhaust doesn't hang.

Sorry for the lack of pictures. This was my first DIY. Let me know if you guys want anything clarified and I'll try my best to answer.

Thanks for reading!

The last picture of of the catback connecting to the downpipe, is that gap supposed to be there? I am outside right now with my car jacked up and I have re-tighted those 2 bolts with the new exhaust pipe to the downpipe and there is that little bit of gap between pipes. I think that it wont tighten any more but I want to be sure. Am I correct guys? For the record I am installing the Cobb Cat-back system.

Thanks!

I am trying to ship my stock sti exhaust, and i'd really like to take it apart into 2 peices. I know you say its really hard to get those bolts off, but is there a way, and has it been done before?

Do you think it is possible (or okay) to ship the entire exhaust in some sort of box?

i need a little help here haha, so.....
