Default How to: Turbo blanket and Down pipe wrap

Hey,

Just finished wrapping my DP and putting on the Turbo Blanket! Got the kit from mike. It's a universal DEI kit with 2 rolls of exhaust wrap and a 2 layer blanket for the turbo.
***The silicone wrap sealer does NOT come with the kit I bought***

When wrapping the down pipe, I set it in a vise so I could wrap tightly. I used a bucket of hot water and immersed all of the wrap intended to be used on the DP. I let it soak for 15-20 mins. I then started wrapping from Bellmouth-down. Since I wrapped an other part, I only had enough wrap for the vertical part of the DP.

The kit comes with steel bands to secure the wrap, but they are crap. You can't get them tight enough to hold the wrap properly and they slip. I ended up using band clamps/worm gear clamp made in stainless.

After the wrap is secured it needs to dry before the sealant can be applied. If left alone, this can take 1 or 2 days. I didn't have this time, so I took a garden torch and heated the DP from the inside. Within 20 mins, the wrap was 100% dry.

I then used the silicone spray and applied 3 coats letting it dry in between.(follow directions on can)

Now for the Turbo blanket. The package has 2 very long blankets. There is an inner layer and an outer layer with an aluminum reflective finish.
I ended up cutting the blankets to 17.5"(half length)
This allowed the blanket to be placed properly over the hotside on the turbo and not be too long as to interfere with the Up-pipe.

place the tanned color wrap on the hotside and tuck it in. The top layer will hold it in place once it is placed over top

For the top layer I held it in place and took a marker to indicate where to cut slit and a waste gate relief hole. The slits are there to allow the top blanket to fit over the OEM heat shield bracket. I then sewed in the wire on the front side of the top layer. I started by twisting the wire for the front side, then using a stainless band clamp to hold the rear part of the blanket against the downpipe.

This is the top layer of the blanket. You need to cut a relief hole for the wastegate and remove the triangle piece. This will allow the blanket to be pulled tightly around and not bunch up. The other 2 red marks are optional if you want to keep the OEM heat shield bracket.

The above pics show the steps and the methods used to secure the blanket in place.

ATTENTION!!!!! When you go for your first ride and get the turbo hot, there will be ALOT of smoke coming from the blanket. It's burning itself in and smokes quite a bit. I was stopped getting the mail, then freaked out.
I did not open the hood, but starting driving home and quickly got the fire extinguisher. Then, after slowly opening the hood, I noticed it was only smoking-I was freaking out

I will follow up with more details soon,

Eric

Good write-up. I've been wanting to do both of these mods for a while now.

That isn't the right way to install a turbo blanket. You're supposed to weave the steel wire in the outer wrap.

Thanks Jay,

You are right. I went back to the DEI website and found it. I can easily remove the wire from the tan wrap. one quick snip and I can pull it out.
Thanks for catching that.
