Default Snorky's Super Cheap, Super Easy In-Car Camera Mount Solution

After hanging out in my back seat trying to use the ebay C-pillar bar as a camera mount, I came up with a mounting location that requires no drilling, extensive modification, or extra parts aside from the camera mount itself and the camera.

I don't know about you but I don't use my center child seat anchor for anything. But it is a great place to mount a Camera.

The camera mount can be bought here. I paid $40 ($39.13) for it to my door. It's marketed as a motorcycle handlebar camera mount:

Tools required:
-Two Hands
-13mm Socket and Socket Wrench
-A Round Bastard File (that's what they're called)

Here it is:

Remove the center child seat anchor. This requires popping the plastic cover off:

Lift the plastic piece by the front. You should be able to do this with your fingers. Lift at a rearward angle Voila:

There is a single bolt holding the anchor to the rear deck. It is a 13mm bolt (believe it or not. this is a rarely utilized size for anyone who is familiar with working on imports). Use the ratchet to remove the single bolt:

Here are the pieces of the mount. You will save the 13mm bolt and the flat washer. The rest, throw in a bag and toss it into a drawer to never be seen again:

The camera mount comes to you as three pieces: The base with a knob on one end and 2 U bolts, the center locking section, and the knob that connects to the camera. Discard the U bolts, we don't need them.

The 13mm bolt from the child seat anchor will replace the U bolt on the camera mount base. The 13mm will not slide into the base of the camera mount because it is metric and the base is imperial. You will need the bastard file to remove a small amount of the coating inside of the hole that the bolt is supposed to go through. Some light filing should do the trick.

Here is the base ready to be bolted in:

Insert the 13mm bolt and the flat washer through the base and bolt it back into it's home on the rear deck:

Use the protruding piece of fabric as a centering point for the front of the base as you bolt it in:

Attach the Center Locking Section of the mount to the base:

Attach the Camera Mounting Knob to the Center Section:

Attach your camera. If you are using a digital camera like I did for the following shots, you can use a mirror to center the camera. With a video camera, you can usually flip the LCD screen to center your shot

Here are some pics I shot real quick just to give you an idea of the view this mount offers. With a video camera with a wide angle lense you will see more.

I'll post some vids here when I race this season. I'll be using a Sony HDR Video camera.
