What is the deal with the subaru shop manuals?!?!?!?

I have worked on other makes of cars and always had a telephone book sized shop manual with everything you could ever want to know about the car. They are not that expensive either.

So when I picked up my 08 STi and asked for a copy of the shop manual I was surprised to get a run around. Turns out subaru sells them in separate binders for different parts of the car and the total manual is over $600!!!! WTF

Doe anyone know of another way to get this info, anyone have it on disk or online somewhere?

i have not downloaded it, but i believe this is the site:

i think someone said you can get the short subscription and then spend your time downloading the entire manual.

thanks, I will have to sit down for a weekend and do that. Still pretty weak though - if they are going to give the the freakin thing for 34 bucks why not just give it to me?

Two options I found for physical copies (that way you don't have to print hundreds of pages):

if you want a brand new copy and have ~$600 laying around you can pick up all eight volumes here: Books4Cars.com - Every Repair Manual, Service Manual, Owners Manual and Book for your Car, Truck and Motorcycle

or there is good old eBay. I actually just bought the full set today for my 2005 for $110 shipped.

Techinfo.subaru.com is your best bet. I spent a whole weekend downloading PDF's and now I have a couple of MY's
