Default Install Guide: Zero/Sports 6-Pot Brake Kit

Hello again from EDO Performance!

Today we have for you an installation guide for the Zero/Sports 6-Pot Brake Kit. It is being installed on a 2006 STi, but the procedure will be the same for any other compatible Subaru.

For when 4 piston brakes will just not do the job, Zero/Sports has developed a 6 Piston Brake Caliper Kit track use. Made of lightweight aluminum, the 6 Piston Brake kit will drastically increase braking power while substantially reducing the unsprung weight attached to the wheel hub. Each Zero/Sports 6 Piston Caliper weighs in at 7.5 pounds, that’s 2.5 pounds lighter than the 10 pound stock calipers.
The special heat dissipation characteristics of the Zero/Sports ZP-B brake pad make it possible to reach extremely high temperatures without losing braking efficiency. The Zero/Sports ZP-B Brake Pads included with this kit are made of an asbestos-free ceramic-metallic compound with an optimal friction coefficient of 0.70 at rotor temperatures of 830 degrees Celsius. It is recommended that you use Zero/Sports Sport, Circuit or ZP-B Brake Pads with this kit for your rear brakes.
This kit contains the brake calipers, brake pads, brake rotors, brake hoses, mounting brackets and bolts. This is everything you will need to install the caliper kit.

1. First, as with most installs, you need to get the car in the air. A lift or jackstands will work fine. Once you have the car up, remove the front wheel. The instructions will be for the drivers side, but can be repeated the same on the passengers side.

2. With the wheel off, it’s time to disconnect the brake line. You will need a 10mm flare nut wrench to remove the hard brake line from the flexible brake line. Make sure you place a drip pan underneath the line as fluid will start coming out once the line is off. You can now remove the retaining clip from the mounting point with a pair of pliers of a flathead screwdriver.

3. With the flex line disconnected from the hard line you can now remove the old caliper. This is actually very simple, just remove the two 17mm bolts on the calipers bracket and you can pull the whole caliper right off.

4. To remove the brake rotor, take a firm grip on it and pull forward. If it won’t move, give it a few light taps on the back with a hammer to get it loose.

5. With the rotor off, attach one of the Zero/Sports caliper brackets using the holes in the hub that the original caliper was attached to. Use two of the shorter bolts included with the kit and two washers to secure it.

6. Place one of the new rotors on the hub and while holding in place, attach the new caliper to the rotor and secure it to the bracket using two long bolts and lock washers included with the kit.

7. Attach one end of the new brake line included with the kit to the caliper, and the other end to the hard line you disconnected the stock line from. Secure the rubber block on the brake line to the mounting point on the strut tower then replace the metal clip you removed earlier to secure the hard line to the bracket.

8. Repeat the steps to install the kit on the other side of the car then make sure to give the brakes a through bleeding.

Yes, the stock fluid tank/master cylinder will be fine. It would probably be a good idea to also add SS brake lines for the rear brakes and change to a better than stock brake fluid (something along the likes of Motul). But other than that the brakes are pretty much ready to go with whats in the kit.

I was always under the impression that a 6 pot setup wouldn't really work well without an upgraded Master Brake Cylinder.
