However the numbers do not tell the full story of this turbo. The feel of this turbo compared to its larger counterparts is amazing. The key here is turbo response which cannot be measured by a dyno. Essentially the time between boost onset to power delivery (sometimes known as turbo lag) is far superior its larger cousins. Anyone can assemble an “oil cooler kit” for the Subaru Impreza WRX / STI, but key components such as a thermostat, line size, core selection, and mounting location are critical components that many individuals overlook. While track-side tuning Brian Locke’s WRX US Touring Car, the WRX’s ability to sufficiently cool its oil when operating in extreme conditions became glaringly apparent. Even in cool weather with moderate cycling, the factory system seems stressed, resulting in dangerously high oil temperatures (this is probably why the Spec C’s come with an oil cooler from the factory). After testing various solutions, we finally selected a setup that is more than capable of dealing with the stress of road racing. With the Gruppe-S Oil Cooler, the racing oil temperature was reduced a consistent 40 degrees F, even in 110 degree + temperatures of Arizona, as proven with our data logs. In short, this oil-cooler works and it has been track tested on a race winning vehicle. So you're probably wondering, what exactly do I get for that extra $299? We have replaced the stock hyper-cast pistons with our custom forged units by Wiseco. Wiseco Pistons were selected due to their versatility for both street and race applications; they eliminate the compromise of a "loose" race piston by retaining a better operating range. The factory bearings have also been replaced with coated race units that eliminate the spun / seized bearing issue we often see in high power applications. The longblock utilizes Cometic gaskets and ARP Head Studs to affix the heads to the block. Finally, the entire assembly is professionally balanced and assembled to race specifications (within 1 gram). When coupled with the lighter forged pistons, the is a redline that has been raised to 7500RPM. We recommend this short-block for all Subaru owners making in excess of 460HP. Can the stock motor hold more power? Yes, but based on our experience building and tuning literally hundreds of Subarus, the reliability of the engine becomes questionable at those power levels. Assembly time is generally 2-3 weeks. For the Long block option, we require a core charge for the heads which will be refunded if you heads are in good working order.
