Default 2013 WRB STI - My First Scoobie, But Not The Last

I'm finally making a build thread. I wanted an STI from the very beginning, 2004. The only problem back then was that I had just started college and was poor, but I set my sights on an STI. Finally the time came and I was really to trade in my truck for a 2013 WRX STI. This is my first brand new car and what a car to own as my first new car, and first manual car too, although not the first car I've driven stick in.

I always wanted to grab the STI brand new to have a blank slate for modding. The goal isn't to have the fastest STI or the best handling STI, but to make it a more raw performance platform for my tastes. Plus, modding makes a car your own, so this thread documents how I am making my STI my own, and all the shenanigans we go through together.

Photos from the day I got her:

With on 8 miles on the Odometer:

Took a minute to get used to the giant wing in the rear-view mirror:

Finally, the reason I bought new, a blank slate, an empty canvas to mod and make my own:

Here's why I bought the STI instead of a 370z or a Mustang: AWD towing. The STI gets to be on motorcycle-hauling duty from time to time.

Hitch: CURT Trailer Hitch #11317
Wiring harness: Standard wiring harness from U-Haul
Extras: Curt Class I Drawbar - 3-3/4 Risefor 2,000 lbs towing and 2" Hitch Ball 2 X 3/4 X 2-1/8

She does great towing my ZX-6R, gotta love all the torque:

Thanks! More to come, this journal is later in the game, still plenty of mods to document.

Both car and bike are pretty awesome right now. After modding both, some days it really is a struggle to decide which one to take to work lol.

This is a lesson's learned post. Back in March of 2012, I hydroplaned into a curb while going through a roundabout. You can see the result below, the wheel really shouldn't be touching the rear sidewall lol. In the end, needed to replace the control-arm. After the insurance sponsored repair, the car still felt off. Thankfully I decided to give Mach V a try and see if they could get my STI back to normal. They did, and thus began me throwing money at them for tuning and installs, they do great work, well worth the price.

Now the lesson learned. I was probably going through the roundabout too fast for being in the rain, with snow tires. But I think I also committed the cardinal sin of cornering, I lifted. I drifted to the outside curb probably when I got off the gas, mid-turn . Since then I have been very mindful of how I drive, and how to properly drive AWD through a turn, NEVER LIFT!!! I have never had an issue since with snow tires and the rain, I've tried to not go into corners so hot, but also tried to do a better job listening to my car. Feeling for when traction is being used up, lightening feeling of steering for the most part. Regardless, the screw ups are part of the journey.

Finally, my first engine mod... Stage 1 tune:

The Cobb tune really smooths things out. It can be deceptive and feel slower at lower RPMs. This feels most prominent after a fresh reflash and ECU reset, as the ECU begins to relearn it feels extra sluggish. At WOT, the difference it very noticeable. This thing really pulls now. I decided to wait a year for at least Stage 2, just to see how my engine reacted to the tune, as we all know how finicky these engines can be.
