Honestly some of the hardest parts to getting the mpg up were the warm up conditions. Since I only live about 6 miles from the shop, most of my driving is during warmup conditions when the MPG is the worst. Out of those 210 miles I think 35 or so are from the freeway.. maybe a few more but not many.

Stock turbo, too. (Mine was the wingless white one in JAX on your last trip - but I was out of town during the tuning).

IWSTI Addict since: Jul 2006 | I use the SI drive now just for my 3 boost maps. I is set at 14psi, S is now 18psi, and S# is 21psi. There is now way to see the same MPG without running a larger turbo. |

IWSTI Addict since: Jul 2006 | The larger turbo and hotside allows the engine to breath making it more efficient off boost. More efficient also means the car makes more off boost hp then stock. So accelerating the car from a stop without having to get into boost becomes easier thus using less fuel. I am now able to drive the car around pulling off from stops and accelerating up to 40-50mph quickly without ever going over 2-3psi... thats how I can get such good mpg. Or a better example would be if you took an NA only car. Now take that NA car and run it through a 1.5" catback exhaust (think stock VF turbo), now if you changed it to a free flowing 2.5" (tial hotside) cat-back exhaust you would pick up MPG as the engine becomes more efficient even in pure NA form. This example is even more pronounced with a turbo car because I am able to accelerate the car quickly now using only NA power vs having a turbo that spools instantly but chokes off the NA power. |

IWSTI Addict since: Dec 2008 | who is this doug@topspeed.....hacker!!!!! makes sense, its impossible to truck around down without hitting boost with the vf48. another good reason to go to a bigger turbo! |
