I bought a kit from a local led seller, I always hated how the trunk light only lid on one side, honestly... it doesn't do much even after a 12 led plate swap.

so here it is... i'll let the pics do the talking

Did you just stick the lightbar to the headliner just in front of the plastic? I was thinking of doing something similar, but actually put it under the plastic piece and drill small holes where the LEDs are.

it had 3m double sided tapes on it, and i just sticked onto the headliner
