Alright... going in next Wed for the reflash. They said it only alters the AFR above 6700 rpm. I fail to see how that will do anything at all to help me as I never really venture over 6k.

Well, the SOA rep I emailed confirmed the recall too:

Quote:
Hello Keith:

Subaru of America announced Service Program Campaign WVE15 yesterday. Owners with 2008 WRX STI vehicles affected by this campaign should expect their official notice in the mail in 1-2 weeks. Your vehicle is affected by this campaign. The following information is from the official notice that you will receive in the mail.
During a quality review, we discovered that under certain harsh driving patterns, specifically when repeatedly or continuously operating the engine above the “red-line” (RPM above 6,700), abnormal combustion could occur resulting in serious internal engine damage in the form of broken piston ring lands. This abnormal combustion condition is the result of an “over lean” fuel mixture caused by a combination of fuel cut activation and high turbo boost. To prevent this condition from occurring, Subaru has developed a modification to the Engine Control Module software logic that will improve combustion management above “red-line” engine speed. This revised logic will not adversely affect the peak performance of your vehicle.
Once you receive your official notice, please contact an authorized Subaru dealership to schedule an appointment to have this service performed free of cost. Until you have this service performed, please maintain your vehicle’s engine speed below 6,700 RPM.
Thank you for the opportunity to be of assistance. If you need any future assistance, please let us know.

Best wishes,

[Rep Name Removed]

So it seems like the issue is during fuel cut.

I can't tell you how relieving this is. I would expect tuners in the future to incorporate this new fuel cut logic. [**speculation**] That could explain why even tuned ones were popping.

I CANNOT WAIT to get this reflash.

Just so everyone knows I got confirmation about the cause of the issue from a SOA rep:

Check it out:
Service Program Bulletin WVE#15: Engine Control Module (ECM) Reprogramming

Apparently the fuel cut logic is causing detonation and blowing ring lands.

Very interesting. The wording of his response is a bit confusing though. There is no way to "operate above redline" with the rev limiter in place, unless you mechanically overrev the engine.

I would definitely want to know more about this ECU update. Does it reduce boost near redline like what has been hinted at (i.e. bandaid fix) or does it actually improve the rev-limiter/fuel cut logic. If this is the case, is this logic in the form of a table that tuners already have access to or is this part of the ECU's logic that tuners can't or typically don't modify. Basically, can tuners give us the same thing?

It will be GREAT to have a car dynoed after teh reflash.

Also STi413 since you appears to have a prettu good relation with some SOA employee, could you ask about any update with the 2007's STI's??

Thanks
