either HIR or other fogs can be used with no issues. they both pull the same amps. the extra light from HIR comes from the reflecting infered heat making the filiment hotter, thus more light.

Mine came today, part number 13506 ... but the bulb doesn't seem to want to go in enough to catch all 3 threads on the base. Do I need to trim one of them?

to do it without going extreme.

lay under the car, there are 2 side splash guards infront of the front wheels. take off the one clip closest to the front, and there is one other phillips style clip beside one of the two tow hooks. peal the splash guard back, and do the bulb replacement. it will take you maybe 5 mins a side, depending on how fast you work.

EDIT: glad you didn't go with HIDs,

not sure HIDs are a good idea in the fog lights. becides the idea of HIDs as fog lights, those housings are not designed for HIDs.
now, this guys doesn't know if his HID ballast failed and cought fire or if the housing melted then cought fire. but either way, do you want this happening?
