Default STI at invoice is a good deal?

Called the dealer today and they have an Urban Grey for 32, is that a good deal? Extras include dimm mirror, short throw knob, some security features.

Invoice is good but i have a feeling if you try dealing with internet fleet sales deparments of your local dealer you might be able to get like 500 under invoice or better on the color of your choice

you ask to see if they will sell it to you for invoice, if they say no, you look elsewhere.

Internet sales dept. is the key, just email a bunch of dealers.

Sticker = the full retail price on the window incl options
Invoice = what the dealer pays to have that vehicle on his floor
Holdback = what the dealer gets kicked back from the manufacterer at a later date for selling the car.

The holdback is what explains how a dealer can sell a car at invoice (or lower) and still make money. Often, there are even additional rebates that dealers get that can make more profit for the dealer or allow them to go deeper into the discount. The rebate programs are very secetive so you need an insider to know when they are active. There can be as much as $2500 in kickbacks to the dealers at times even when sold at invoice.

The closer the 2008s get, the cheaper the 2007s should be.

Makes sense, i was just wondering why a dealer would sell a car for what they pay or less.

That sounds good.

Honestly, as long as you walk out of the place feeling like you got a good deal and the car that YOU wanted (most importantly the color and options), then you are set. Even if you ask us, we all come from different car markets so the prices will vary.

You are not getting ripped off at invoice or a bit under. I would rather avoid the hassle and pay a little bit more to get exactly what I wanted. I don't know about you. Shopping around a bit to compare the competition is good, but going to extreme lengths like out of state and such is not worth the time or money.

on top of that... shopping out of state doesn't really save you money, cus they tax you by your address.... by the time you drive there and back... you've spent more.

if dealers use the holdback they must be desparate in selling the vehicle. Holdback is what usually pays for there expenses (building, utilities, commissions, etc) I work for a Subaru dealership and usually invoice - incentive is a good deal here in MN...luckily for me I get a flat pay for each vehicle sold...Sometimes we need to get rid of a vehicle they will use all of the holdback and more..i.e. Baja & 06 tribecas

usually HB is 2% of the list price...so $30k is $600 HB

It's because they don't! They make you think that their Invoice is actually what they paied for the car but its not.

A while ago there was a Dodge dealer here in my town that was advertising they were selling cars/trucks at $500 Below Invoice. Sounds like a pretty good deal right!?

My dad goes in and says I'll buy and pay cash for the truck right now! They said great!

Dad says: Before I cut you a cheque I need you to prove to me what your actual cost is.

Dealer shows him their invoice on that truck.

Dad: No, no, no, I want to see your actual General Ledger (GL). For people who don't know what a GL is it's basically there official accounting books/records....

Dealer: WHAT.... WE CAN'T DO THAT!

Dad: So how do I know what your actual cost is on the truck?

Dealer: Because we just showed it to you!

Dad: No, you showed me a piece of paper that shows a bunch of numbers that you made up!

Dealer: No really, this is our cost on this truck!

Dad: So if it is in fact the same, then why can't you show me your GL?

Dealer: Sorry, but we can't do business with you!

Dad: So basically your add of selling cars/trucks today at $500 below cost is total BS and false advertising?

Dealer: We have nothing more to say!

And that was that!

So their is a perfect example of how dealers make you THINK you are getting a good deal (and sometimes you do) but in the end, they ALWAYS make money!

No dealer is going to sell cars actually below their cost! No business does!

And if they do, they might have one car on the lot (probably used) just so they can't get sued for false advertising!

Jay

EDITED to "false"! Thanks Mrigor! Sorry, my fingers somestimes do things on their "owne"...

Invoice is not the same as cost.

If they offered your dad a vehicle at "cost", then you were within your rights to demand proof. If they said they would sell it at "invoice", then you were overstepping their offer by demanding to see their GL.

Invoice is not the same as cost. Where have I heard that before?
